As it says do I need to put the cap onto the top of my demijohn airlock? Also should I put water or miltons in the airlock?

Sam

what type of airlock is it?
Is it a bubbler type or one of those where the lid is like a sleave and looks a bit like a top hat?

If bubbler, UI leave the cap off. just half fill the bubbles with water and let it burp away.

I've never used the other type I believe you run them with the cap on.

Sorry Paul, if it's the standard bubbler with a red cap, you leave it on.

It's only a dust cap, there is sufficient gap for the gas to escape.

With the the tubular ‘handy’ airlock, likewise, there is enough of a gap to allow gas to escape while keeping fruit flies out.

One third fill it with water, or scrape a bit of dust off a Campden tablet into that water.

No problem Moley, I've slung most of the red caps that came with my bubblers.
I should have known you're meant to put them on, otherwise why else would they be in the packet in the first place? :wha:

Thanks.

I think you can regard them as optional, they are bound to get knocked off and lost, you can always lightly plug the top of the trap with a bit of cotton wool.

Tubular traps are cheaper and quieter.
