There's nothing new, revolutionary or enlightened in Dave Heath or Brulosophy videos. They are just flipping the concept of marginal gains into marginal sacrifices to create something adequate and fault free. There's nothing wrong with that if it's your goal. The tell is in the comments section of the video, Dave Heaths response to anyone questioning this video, is to meet with the stock answer of 'It comes down to personal taste', as he can't refute the arguments, as there are advantages to not making these sacrifices, by following proven practices that are technically correct.

A bit like deciding you only want to finish a marathon, not win it. Still an incredible achievement, but you could get away with training less hard, eating less well, a putting in a bit less energy on the day.

By all means question everything in brewing. That also includes the motivations of those giving advice.
 
I think quoting David Heath and Marshall Schott, two home brewers as an authority on brewing science beggar's belief.
I believe that David Heath was a Master Brewer in charge of recipe development for many years, as well as a home brewer so may have a better insight than most of us?

Really! Where was he employed as a master brewer?

I have edited the video so it starts at the part where he mentions his past he doesn't say where he brewed in the video and i am not a member of his channel so don't know if he gives more detail there one thing is for sure he knows his stuff and shares it for free so i don't see why so many people dislike him so much.

I was a porn movie star under the name of Maxwell Hung. I wasn't really but I like to tell people that. I don't think telling someone qualifies the master brewer suggestion.
If I was a qualified master brewer I would be working in a brewery raking it in, instead of sitting in an accounts clerks office of a brewing equipment wholesaler.
 
I too enjoy watching David Heath on YouTube, I find them simple to understand and professionally done. What is there not to like?
For a certified Master Brewer (I don't doubt he is), his videos are low on detail and often include dubious assertions, rather than facts to make his point.



Given that its relevant to the boil discussion, the above is a classic example. He makes the point that long boils can improve malt flavour, then claims that it isn't particularly useful for lager styles. Seriously, in a low hopped, extremely clean fermented style, improved malt flavour isn't useful?

Anyhow, let's look at the rest of the video that addresses common homebrew mistakes. Oh...the remainder appears to be a 5 minute infomercial for the official grainfather false bottom. Strange, how is that applicable to the vast majority of homebrewers that don't own a Grainfather?

No jealousy here. Just an awareness that homebrewing can be monetize in various ways. Watch, like and subscribe.

Well he didn't say he was a master brewer but he did say he brew commercially which as it says below may mean he has "a better insight than most of us"

Again he sounds like a good guy, what’s wrong with people today who want to knock him, jealousy I think.

Why he posted the video -
Due to some rude and also quite nasty comments from a small minority of people I have decided to put together this quick video that explains my background story and the future of my YouTube channel. So for those of you that are interested, I go through my background and private life and clearly state the influences for my channel content. After this I talk about the future of my channel. I have also changed my brewing channels description to make my position clear. I hope that this is enough to satisfy the negative minority and equally I hope for those that see my channel for what it really is it provides some interesting information.

There was someone that made some accusations about him years ago, and mud sticks.
 
It's a general problem with YouTube with sponsored content and paid product placement, with many channels now providing complete transparency as to how they are monetised or how they aquire the products they use.
 
If I can get my plug in power measurer working I'll get the figures for my next brew day. Just got to make a screwdriver to undo the security screws on the plug first. Then will find that " there's very little fixable I expect ". Our solar hot water heater does get the water to 55 celsius at the tap which helps reduce the heating to strike temperature and no heating water for cleanup.
 
Er.....umm.....if any body's still interested, I've just had a brew day and the water heating (gas) for strike, sparge and boil cost £5.56 :confused.:. For a forty pint batch works out a smidge under 14p a pint 😲
Ouch... I put up solar panels so moving forward brewing is free but so far it has costed me roughly £355/pint. Guess I need to get brewing more to build up the divisor.
 
Also regarding the dms conversation this is an interesting article about it. I am curious if we are just accustomed to dms in beer?

Boil
Most of the DMS in beer produced from the SMM precursor is lost (evaporated) during the boiling process. Specifically, it was determined that the half-life of SMM at boiling point is 37 minutes, which means that half of the SMM is evaporated from the boil pot at 37 minutes. A boil of 90 minutes removes approximately three quarters of the DMS and most of the SMM is lost during a 120 minute boil.

I think some of my beer was costing that much when I splurged on gear without the solar hot water. Luckily with beer prices going up that divisor is swinging in your favour.
Down here most pubs are on a 400ml glass which they call a pint, had a fresh hop " pint " of pale ale the other day in a bar 14 dollars so about 7 pounds for that, too cold and couldn't tell there were fresh hops in it. Crazy pricing as for 3 " pints " I can get a sack of malt.
