Cereals questions ....

Don’t put me in doofus corner for this but I’m wanting to try a few cream ales.

Recipes call for flaked maize, flaked corn etc...

Is this basically cornflakes ?

£3 for a Kg of flaked maize plus delivery ... I may be cheaper to nip down Aldi and get a packet of cornflakes !

I believe you can use cornflakes just make sure they do not have loads of sugar and additives probably a basic line one would be best. I am going to do a pseudo (kolsch) lager next and will be using cornflakes from aldi and minute rice as well(its pre cooked and gelatinised) with lager malt. Hope this helps

Yes - if you buy el cheapo corn flakes they look identical to flaked maize.

As above... You can buy flaked maize from brew shops and animal feed specialists or your local supermarket own brand corn flakes. Take your pick.

Forgot to say... You can buy flaked maize and barley for around 10 quid per 25kg sack.

Ive used cheapo ASADA cornflakes, no proble, in cream ales a few times. Im going to be using rice crispies in an ale soon, as Ive read their basically the same as torrifed rice

For flaked corn you can use polenta. Its what i have been sold before but bear in mind its ground so may require some rice hulls.

In this instance, lighten the body, add a flavour dimension and less maltiness . I’m after a cream ale.

I use products from Rude Health a lot. Puffed rice, puffed oats. Mixed flakes (spelt, corn and barley with 5% honey) The great thing is the lack of additives. I also use flaked organic brown rice in a lot of my light beers.
Rude Health are available at Sainsburys - not the cheapest but they have the shortest ingredient list.

I may brew a cream ale tomorrow. ..gh recipe...5kg pale,500g flaked maize...centennial and hallertau (sub) instead of Mount hood...could I use lager malt for this?
