I'm totally new to home brew (1st cider kit on the go) and, lucky me, have just been offered some bits from a friend. 2 X brown and 1 white demijohns (assume white is clear), bungs, air locks, syphon tube and a hydrometer (useful to have a spare).

I assume that brown is to filter sunlight but why and would it be good for all fermenting or should some be done in clear only?

Brown DJs for red wines, or sometimes you can end up with brown wines if they are exposed to direct sunlight.

Personally, I find it can sometimes be hard enough to tell how red wines are clearing, even by shining a torch through them, so keep your clear DJs out of direct sunlight or wrap them with brown paper or black bin bags. I have about 40 clear DJs and not one brown one.

But if they are going free, grab them :thumb:

Yeh, I also got a brown dj of a friend. I presume its to help stop beer and wine from going skunk.
