Second brew this week!
Brewferm Pils
Brewed to 14ltr
500g dark muscavdo sugar
Starting OG 1040
I have high expectations of this, brewed short and added extra sugar, should be 4.5 % abv but expecting around 5.5% abv
Ypu can brew this at 12ltr with no sugar or 20ltr with 1kg sugar, i decided that i would go 14ltr with 500g sugar

Hi dj,

I brewed my first beer at the start of December and that kit also had the two options of adding sugar (for 20ltr) or not (for 10ltr). I went for the "no added sugar" option and the result was way too bitter. And weirdly soapy, but that might be another story .. I can see the flavours mellowing a bit with time, but basically I'm not inclined to brew so short again.

Have you had any good experiences with short-brewing these kits?

I would think that, whilst the sugar concentrations in the short and normal-length brews are the same, the concentrations of everything else (e.g. bitterness) won't be. But maybe it work out for some light beer styles?

All the best,

Ian

Hi ian,

This is my first kit that I have brewed short, and the first time I've done this one.

I'm not sure what the final results will be like, but it does say leave for 6-8 weeks before trying.
I would havr thought brewing at 12ltr would give more flavour than the 20ltr but maybe have the dame abv due to no extra sugar in the 12ltr version

Hang on - you short brewed and added extra sugar yet only got 1040 as the starting gravity?

What would it have been if you brewed full volume and didn't added extra fermentables?!?! 1030?

im sure it will be lovely if u have it well looked after, i brewed it to the full 20l and was lovely but needed left for 3mnth of conditioning to be at its best (like a nice stella-if such a thing is possible) otherwise can taste a bit watery-the review i read also did it short as recommended and said it was fine but he preferred the value for money that is the 20l and its more commercial taste
