Alistair Darling has increased duty on cider by 10% in his pre-election Budget.

But duty on beer, wine and spirits will increase as planned, with alcohol duties increasing by 2% above inflation for two further years from 2013.

Tobacco duty will increase by 1 per cent above inflation and then increase by 2 per cent in real terms each year until 2014.

Mr Darling's 10% duty rise on cider comes ahead of further changes in September to the definition of cider to ensure specific strong ciders are taxed more appropriately.

British Beer and Pub Association chief executive Brigid Simmonds said: "This latest beer tax hike piles on the misery for Britain's hard-pressed pubs and beer lovers. It is also a snub to voters, who by a majority of two to one wanted the Chancellor to scrap the beer tax escalator
"Since 2008, beer tax has increased by an eye-watering 26% - a £761 million tax rise - and we have seen the loss of 4,000 pubs and over 40,000 jobs up and down the country. Beer sales are down £650m in the last year alone."

With the 10% above inflation rise on Ciders i'd be interested to see if the sales of Apple Juice and Yeast increase over the next few months. :hmm:

VOTE LABOUR

Vote to burn Alistair Darling on a fire.

Not that I care now anyway, all my brews are homebrew. The only thing I drink these days :D

I'm a socialist through to the very core of my being.

Unfortunately the labour govt aren't. To be honest, I'm a little lost... no, I'm a f'kin huge bit lost. I hate this government, I hate it because of the way it has abandoned us, the way it has sold us away to all and everyone. But most of all, I hate it because of how the honest worker now sees and understands what it means to be labour. labour with a small 'l'

Christ almighty. Anyone seen a banker begging on the streets? There's plenty of the rest of us there with our hands held out, all that we had taken away from us.

Will there be a labout government after the election? Will there f'ck.

Thankfully.

Rant (and sobbing) over. I now refuse to discuss this again.

I Knew the rise in cider duty was coming, as some of the big beer brewers have been lobbying the GOV, for quite a while on the grounds that the big cider producers were unfairly making very large profits as opposed to the beer producers, therefore the playing field was grossly unfair, when comparing Cider to Beer producers.

Now due to the Cider duty rise, the playing filed is fairer for the businesses involved.

However Due to the re-alignment of cider duty to bring it into line with beer duty & a few other factors, what you are likely to see is a market trend, where the cost of beer in pubs and off sales will now have to rise, over and above the duty rise.

Some of the larger producers who have interests in both production of beer and cider, have been staying solvent by subsidising there beer output with the extra profits from cider, therefore they have been able to keep there wholesale beer prices lower than they should be in the preferred business model. they will no longer be able to do this, therefore the current price war will have to end, and there is likely to be an increase in wholesale cost of end product across the market.

The war between the big brewers and the GOVERNMENT thieves goes on, and therefore expect over the next few years further reductions in the ABV's of leading brands & higher prices & duty's as the companies do everything they possibly can to turn a profit.

The Smoking Industry no longer provides the convoy of Cash it used to, therefore Alcohol is now to be the new smoking, expect it to be so bad for your health soon that it will need to be banned to consume it in a public place, & passive drinking fumes will be a silent killer, "The massive consumption of cold lager in this country is causing a hole in the ozone the size of africa due to the massive carbon footprint of the refrigeration equipment required to chill it, we must levy a £1 million per pint EU Carbon tax per pint to stop this environmental disaster" (they will use any old crap as something to justify the need for the High tax levies.

It worries me in the fact that I work in the industry, & job security might not be what it was, (same boat for everyone) but as far as a consumer, it doesn't worry me one bit, as I hardly buy Drink, I prefer to make it.

I have also read with interest the comments on the Labour Gov, and in my opinion:
"They are Socialist" they take from the rich (people who work) and give to the Lazy, (benefits scroungers, & people who are on the sick, Most of them also lazy bstards, some genuine I agree but the majority as per,)

"They are Communist" they have gradually and against the will of the populus, given away governance to the new communist state that is rising to overall power the "EU" (who now have a body unelected bourjois elite, Instructing us how and when to live our lives) another term in office and LABOUR will have virtually handed all power over and fulfilled their dream of a communist state of citizens, and no further gov will have any power to change things, the UK GOV will be no more powerful than a county council.

"New" they are not, Labour are a one trick pony, Borrow Big and Spend Big, and leave loads of sh*t for someone else to deal with, then after a few years of hard measures by another government to bring the books back into line "where we the populus pay big time" Labour start the we are a better party than these that are taxing you hard party, vote for us we will make things better, they get in and the cycle starts again, spend spend spend, let the next lot pick up the tab. They are not good for the working man, they only say they are fighting for the working classes as they are the biggest form of funds through Union funds, its simple "No workers No Unions No Money No Labour party" therefore employ vast amounts of people in the public sector, P*ss em off just enough to get them to join a union, once the loyal sheep are paying in, Take the cream off the top, Good Business model methinks.

I am not in favor of the Lib Dems as I think they will be worse for my pocket, I also think they will give even more power to the EU, Watered down labour.

I know that the conservatives will also be bad for my pocket, as someone needs to pay for the mistakes this current GOV has made, but they seem the best of the bunch, at least they are saying there needs to be big cuts, they don't have the balls to say how big, but the do talk some sense.

For me I would prefer to vote for a party who, reduce taxation and big brother Governance to a minimum, and rely on Natural Selection to sort things out, "You work yo do well, you don't you perish" Sadly no-one party seems to have the balls to do it.

Rant Over

And we'll end up in the hands of the IMF. Anything but the current Government. Vote for CHANGE. MMmmmm sounds like 1997 again!!!

Whoever gets voted in we will see:

A double dip recession
Pound devalued vs $, possibly to $1.40-$1.20 range
Petrol up as £ is devalued.
More defaults on mortgages
Higher unemployment.

Moral....Brew your own beer :drink: and grow your own Veggies.

**** a brick!
After reading this whole thread, including all of UP's post, I can see no way out!
Maggie was right and Enoch's going to be right.
I am NO racist, but I'm not happy with them getting preference over us in so called PC.
Hell you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't.
Was membership of the EEC right for us?
We seem to obey their every edict, the rest of the member countries don't seem to.
The UK is a sovereign state and needs a strong government that put the UK first.
I think I'd better shut up!
