i went and fetched the ingredients earlier from a local place with the intention to brew over the weekend but couldnt wait. a bonus was they didnt have styrian goldings in 100g packs so gave me a 250g pack for the same price which was good.
i started at half 3 cleaning out the boiler and bodging some temporary insultation on as id forgot to buy some earlier.

heated 30l to 71'c with half a campden tablet then drained 9l into 2 pans that will be brought upto temp and sparged with along with a top up of 2.6l. going with the water volume from graham wheelers book for the first brew.

after doughing in the temp was 64'c, might have gone lower because i had just cleaned out the bag and rinsed with cold water so will try being more organised next brewday so the bag isnt as cold to see if 71'c is about right. i fired up the boiler giving a good stir until reaching 66'c then put the lid on.

been mashing now for 35 minutes and no temp loss as of yet and the smell is great.

quick question - do i need to crush the protoflic tablet or throw in hole?

ya just plonk the tablet into the brew, although half a tablet will be sufficient.

Good luck.

:thumb: don't have too much fun....its very addictive. :D

well all finished and cleaned up :D
sparged with 9l at 76'c using to top up to 26l mark at the start of boil and back up to 27l half way through. pre boil o.g was 1.041 temp corrected without the other 4l of sparge wort to go in so think this reading is a little out.
sight glass read 25l when turning off the boiler and 24.5l after cooling. the immersion chiller got me down to 21'c in 17 minutes. i ended up a bit short of volume at just under 22l with an o.g 1.042 bang on as stated in the book.
im not sure if when cooled and draining i did it correctly tho as theres a fair bit of floating stuff in the fv that has settled after 10 minutes in there. as soon as i hit temp i started to drain with the ball valve open fully. is this right or should the flow be slower or wait for a bit before draining?
now for the pics -

Congrats on AG#1!

Floaters just looks like trub (coagulated protein) it'll just settle to the bottom of the FV and won't do any harm. :thumb:

kitchen smelt great. any ideas on how i ended up with a lower volume but the right gravity? i boiled off 5l in 90 mins, how do i work out what percentage boil off that is per hour. not sure how to work it out. trying to alter the figures on brewmate to find the boil off rate, loss to trub and chiller and also efficiency. thanks

boil off calculation

1 hour boil

100/(litres pre boil)x litres after boil

i.e 100/26(say) x 21 (say) = x

%boil loss = 100-x.

Congrats on AG#1 :thumb:

Looks like everything went rather well for you, well done

well done, looks like a good brewday was had! These new All Grainers have all been taught well, now they're even gallous enough to be drinking while doing their first brew!

it certainly went better than expected. weighing out the grain was a bit messy with dust. the kitchen table had a change of colour lol.
swmbo didn't moan about smell or taking over the kitchen and helped when needed it, so that's got to be a good thing.
I think I have worked out my absorption to grain was 0.6l per kg, 11% boil off rate and 2.5l losses to trub and hops.

Well Done danb,

My first AG was TTL as well and I've just finished drinking it ( not this morning mind )

For me, it was a little maltier and yeastier than I wanted and the hops didn't quite cut through as much as I'd hoped. But, for the 1st attempt I was more than happy.

AG2 tomorrow !

Cheers

A

yeah well done , you prob need to increase you eff in software by a few % and increase your water slighty by adjusting loss to trub etc

Congratulations on your first AG. Had some of this from the cask last week whilst up in Yorkshire :thumb:

cant wait to try it all the bits have settled to the bottom of the fv and fermenting away. next up is either sarah hughes dark ruby or hop back summer lightning. old hooky and the marstons pedigree on the list too
