The title "Black IPA" does annoy some people and I can see their point. I think grays is right...it should have been given a classification of Black APA but some one has given it that name and its stuck.

No, that's also wrong..It should be named ...............
Strong, Hopped, Indian, Traditional....
Sorry, Its Friday night, Im tired and that's the best I can come up with

Welcome to the forum by the way :thumb: It is a friendly bunch here most the time.

Id suggest cold steeping some caraf III. Its dehusked and as such imparts less roast flavour. Although, there are 2 schools of thought as to whether a little roast flavour is good or not. Depends what you like at the end of the day.

You could try cold steeping with your malts but the quantity you would need may impart some flavours. The dark crystal will be nice straight in the mash, no cold steep. Im a big fan of extra dark crystal. Just a little gives a real rich ruby colour.

Also, you may loose the nelson with all the Columbus and kohatu. It may be worth saving it for a different brew. ? Or go with the nelson late and save the kohatu but the rougher kohatu may work better in the "style" and stand up to the Columbus better.

rob is correct, Columbus can be a bit of a brute, I prefer it in small doses and at the start, along with other strong hops.

I've just noticed that Mitch Steele calls these :drink: American Style Black Ale

Good on him!

"Black ale with IPA style hop schedule" is a bit of a mouthful.

It's a bit of a curiosity beer anyway, just putting in a big colour adjustment for the sake of it. For me the Black Lager is funnier, I could just imagine handing a bottle to someone at a BBQ and watching their face firstly as they pour what looks like a thin stout, then again when they taste it and get crisp, clean lager...

Cascadian Dark Ale? Certainly sounds the coolest of the lot. Bleh, who cares...stout never used to mean dark, it just meant strong.

I do agree it's a weird style, but there are some cracking examples out there. Libertine by Brewdog is one of my all time favourite beers, and the extra malt profile can really add to the beer without it being one of the over hopped oil bombs that America are so big on...

As far as the individual who decided to have a go is concerned, I asked for help with a recipe, not your personal opinion of whether a certain style of beer is valid or not.

Paulson I am sorry if my post offended.

Black IPA may be a term in use in the brewing scene but that doesn't make it correct. The whole issue of IPA/APA/ Pale Ale Black Pale ale etc always causes controversy on this forum, and usually an ensuing healthy debate. A lot of us believe that an IPA is a specific historical beer which the majority of commercial 'IPA's' not comming anywhere close to how it should do. So the use of the term 'Black IPA' is always going to ruffle feathers. However I appreciate that you may not have been aware of this.

Good luck with your quest for a hoppy black ale. :thumb:
