My born again brewing has gone well, all done on the cheap kit wise, turbo cider, beer kits, country wines, premium wine kits, even a mead and a bit of a compliment amongst the pulled faces from the family has helped.

So about a fortnight ago, following advice on the forum, I bought a crafty fox ag kit, 5 litres, which is nearing bottling. I very much enjoyed brewing it and thought I’d head in that direction. Then all of the sudden Monday I accidentally, so to speak, bought a Klarstein brew kettle at a bit of a deal, Tuesday my employer was having a clear out and asked if I would like an off cut of food grade hose, was looking at pumps same night, Wednesday I was offered a nearly new fridge foc and today I am searching for an Inkbird and planning a reroute of my shed wiring.

Can’t wait for tomorrow but it has given me a lot to think about so I can see a few posts elsewhere in the forum tonight!

I did something similar a couple of years ago. Had no intention of moving into AG then spotted homebrew kit on Gumtree super cheap.

I’ve never looked back!

Klarstein has arrived, seems a nice piece of kit for the money.

Fridge great but does have an ice compartment sadly. Anyone know if they can be removed?

I ripped out the one in my Brew Fridge No. 2 because I don't use it for chilling. (It was broken anyway which us why it was free!)

In the UK the only time you ever need to chill anything is if you:
  • "Cold crash" a brew instead of just waiting for the yeast to drop out of suspension using the "Gravity + Time" system.
  • Brew Lager; and even then you don't need it for most of the year if you are brewing in a garage or other non-heated place.
So the answer to your question "Yes - if you don't need it to refrigerate anything."

BTW, if the fridge is currently working properly and chilling stuff down then:
  1. I don't recommend that the ice compartment is removed.
  2. If the refrigerant is still present then it should be removed by someone who knows how to do it because:
    • When the refrigerant is released it will start to boil at about -44*C and can cause severe freeze burns.
    • The refrigerant may be one of the prohibited "Freon" gases that need to be recovered to prevent pollution.
Enjoy!

All good points Dutto, fridge works great and I wanted to keep it that way. Just wanted a bit more headroom so wondered if freezer compartment can be removed.

I guess it is the same as a fridge freezer where the freezer 'dumps' cold air as needed into the fridge.
