strong smell from fv, okay to use?

To get a really good clean, and to lose the old beer smell, I use a cap full of bleach in cold water, followed by a good rinse and then oxy in warm water. Works a treat and you can smell nowt after that. Do make sure of a good rinse though. Any bleach leftovers will kill the beer.

    Hop pills?

Thanks, I must say, taking some hop essence into the pub to improve a pint sounds like fun. Might look a little dodgey, standing there with a pipette over a beer mind... I'll give the alkaselzer hop tablets a go when i next stock up. Will let you know how it works out. cheers.

    Hop pills?

Hello. Thinking about giving some of these a go and wondered if anyone had any experience using them. http://www.brauundrauchshop.ch/categories-40-1/hopfentabletten/?ica=12 They sound like a hoppy alkaseltzer and if they are any good would make dry-hopping an absolute doddle. Unless...

fermentation fridge - don't put holes in it!

So, I got all set up, wonderful job with my stc-1000 wiring, if I do say so myself. Greenhouse heater a perfect fit and room for 2 fvs too! Was just putting in a wooden shelf to raise the beer above the heater. Screwed in 5 screws. The 6th and last punctured something and much hissing and...

    I'm ready for Christmas

Have been quiet for a while, beavering away in the basement, but today got the last labels on a cascade rich IPA. Will be putting the feet up for the rest of the year with the new years resolution firmly set on buying some AG kit. I have 4 extract based brews here. CHRISTMAS ALE: I thought I'd...

Wheat Beer using extract -Will this work?

Just back from a week in Burgundy, where this brew was blind tasted against Hoegaarden and Hoegaarden Grand Cru. Amongst the panel was a Dutch chap who lives near Brussles and is big into his Belgian beers. It came a respectable 2nd, way better than the bog standard Hoegaarden, but just lacking...

    Quick question on bottling

I dunk all my bottles in the priming bucket filled with chemipro oxi solution, so the bin gets clean and so do the bottles. No need to rinse with this cleaner, but need to make sure the bottles are dry before putting beer in them. I struggled with this a little using the wife's clothes rack...

    metalic taste

Sorry, wasn't clear. Rinsed the bottles with the Chemipro Oxi solution, not rinsed the bottles afterwards with water. If they weren't totally dry (quite likely) I'd have left a bit of cleaning solution in there. The fact that this was one bottle out of 30-odd good-uns already drunk suggests that...

    Crystal Malt Alternatives

You can get pretty much everything from these guys http://www.brouwland.com/ including crystal malts: €3.38 a kilo or €12.30 for 5 kilos and €34.43 for 25 kilos. I'm in France next to the German/Swiss border and get everything from yeast, to kit from these guys. Very reasonable postage and...

    metalic taste

Just experienced a metallic twang for the first time. Actually from a brew made back in March. Had not noticed it before (and it's nearly all drunk). This was an extract brew done in a big ceramic casserole dish, so no metal anywhere near it. Also used Chemipro Oxi - including rinsing the...

1st try at a ginger beer

Just popped a bottle 5 weeks after brewing and pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the tips on this forum the recipe went like: 950g ginger, peeled and whizzed 2 lemons (zest and juice) 2 lines (zest and juice) 1tsp cream of tartar 5tsps ground ginger 2.5kgs bog standard white sugar Total batch...

Wheat Beer using extract -Will this work?

Thanks MPLMPL, My wheat extract appears to be 100% wheat. It's Brewferm's again. Also found the orange and coriander thread, so thought what the heck... Ended up going for 1.5Kg LME 1.5Kg WME 300g Amber ME 10g Target for an hour or so - IBUs might be a weeny bit high at 15.6 33g Saaz when off...

Wheat Beer using extract -Will this work?

50:50 gives me a bit of a dilema. Go for 1.5KG of each and have a small batch or go for 3KG of each and have something seriously heavy. I do have some Amber malt extract (dry), so could maybe do 1.5KG Wheat to 2KG malt (500g of which is amber) to keep the ABV up in a decent batch size? Not sure...

Wheat Beer using extract -Will this work?

Hi all, I've had some pretty good successes using liquid malt extract for ales, so thought I'd have a bash at doing a wheat beer in the same way. Thinking of the below, any ammendment suggestions warmly received :) - I'm not sure what the ratio of malt:wheat should be, but as it comes in tins...

    I have a floater..

Ok, thanks all. Just found it a bit funny that everything was the same (including the yeast) as previous batches (only difference really is 1KG less spraymalt this time) but I'm getting a different result. How long can I keep the skimmings in the fridge for Dave?

    I have a floater..

On my 6th brew. It's an extract like the 4 of the previous 5, but a lighter one this time around. It's been in the FV for just over a week and the top looks like it did 5 or 6 days ago, i.e. like it just got started with lots of foamy/scummy stuff. By now, all previous brews were pretty clear on...

    My Bitter's too bitter!

So, I thought I'd go for a hoppy one for my batch 5. Lots of Fuggles and EKG went in at the end, but I bittered with Target and too much Target. I just put 50g of Target into BrewMate and it tells me I'd be getting 70 odd IBUs from that lot. The taste from the FV yesterday as I bottled started...

Out of interest, what does the ingredient cost work out for a 23L batch of AG origin?
