    First taste of my brew

Thats a good idea. I've been adding a little sugar syrup to it if i'm drinking it alone. With a meal the dry-ness is actually quite refreshing though.

    First taste of my brew

As i understood from what i've read Splenda (well i used Tesco's own version for 1/2 the price) was the thing to use to re-sweeten after fermenting. Its not horrible but i just prefer sweeter cider. I'll have to find some better way of sweetening before bottling in future

    First taste of my brew

I cracked open a bottle of my first brew of cider today and it was better than i expected. However it was very dry, even after a whole tub of Splenda to back sweeten after the primart fermentation. This suprised me. I opened a little bottle i'd chilled as a test bottle and as it was fine we...

Flat and bland from the keg

I batch primed so the level of primer should be fine. I was unaware that kegs took longer to ferment, i assumed it would go at the same pace as the bottles. That would be the likely explanation. Thanks for your input.

Flat and bland from the keg

I kegged my cider 2 weeks ago - 1/2 in bottles the rest in the keg. The bottles are clear so i thought i'd test out the keg. It frothed when i opened the tap into the glass. On tasting though it was flat, cloudy and quite bland. The plastic bottles i've used are hard suggesting good carbonation...

    Priming

I used standard granulated sugar, disolved in the absolute minimum amount of hot water to make a sugar solution and batch primed. My directions called for 1teaspoon per 750ml bottle. I didnt have any 750ml bottles but simple maths showed me i needed 30.66 teaspoons for my 23L brew. I rounded...

    Flip top Grolsch type bottles

Does anyone know where I might find affordable bottles? I've seen them for £3 each :o at my local garden/homeware place but thats about twice what i want to pay. I've seen ones on the Ikea website for £1.46 or so, but will these take pressurised drinks like beer/cider/elderflower...

    Re-using PET bottles

How many times is it safe to re-use old coke/lemonade etc bottles?

A little early for Mackeral i'd say.

    elderflower champagne

I want to try this in the summer. Would the basic recipe also work with other fruits, substituting elderflower for peach, strawberry, cherries etc? A bit of mildly alcoholic fruit "fizz" would go down nicely on hot summer days i think.

    Strawberry Beer/Lager

I was thinking about this the other day, and wondered the same - could you just add a tin of strawberries, cherries or whatever fruit flavour you want to the fermenting bucket? Also, i was wondering about making a citrus type beer/lager. Could you just add lemon peel to the fermenting bucket?

    Strawberry Beer/Lager

My next brew will be a belgium cherry beer - tried it from the shop and found a kit. Its very nice, i hope the kit is just as good.

    0.5% Interest Rates

Its a farce - i've not got much savings but right now they just arent working for me. I've got an ISA paying about 1% at best, an internet only saving account paying aboue 0.75%. I've got a bit in Premium Bonds which dont win because the prize fund has been hammered so much due to the cut in...

When i lived in Orkney I was a big sea angler, although i didnt ever catch much! To me it was all about time out of the house to relax. Anyone who knows Orkney will know how beautiful it is with or without catching fish. However I did used to catch plenty of Mackeral and often would nip down the...

    Fruit wines / hedgerow wines

I'd like to make some fruit wines in the summer and have found this kit http://www.4u2brew.co.uk/product_details_83.htm Will this make meduim to sweet wines? I prefer sweeter wines and cider, but i noticed that my cider went from sweet at the start to dry after fermentation. Will the same happen...

    Leaking Keg?!

Tubby, that looks like the one. I've checked it today and no leaks so that must have been the problem.

    Leaking Keg?!

I've just by chance had to go under the table where my cider is maturing in its keg, which was racked on Sunday night. I found a floor wet with cider and a slow but steady drip from the tap. The tap was obviously turned fully to the "off" position. However, it seems that moving it slightly back...
