Cooper's Eng' Bitter Kit. Fruit Smell Fermentation. Normal?

I have been fermenting a Cooper's English Bitter beer kit from their international series and it has smelt like fruit during the fermentation process. Is it normal to get this ester fruit smell from the Cooper's yeast strain, or is my beer bad? It was fermented at about 20 C, temp wise. It was...

Cane sugar vs dextrose vs maltodextrin. Help needed, please.

I have made by best tasting brew I have ever done. It was a coopers English bitter with a coopers beer kit enhancer that contained dextrose and maltodextrin. It stated that the dextrose will ferment out completely, with the maltodextrin not fermenting but adding to the overall flavour, etc. I am...

Brewing home brew kits. Is it better to boil?

The instructions in most kits that I read state that you don't need to boil, just put the sugar and concentrated wort straight in the fermenting bin and give a good stir to dissolve the sugar. I, however, have always boiled it to dissolve the sugar. When I say boil, I mean both the sugar and...

    Stupid Instructions

I dont boil the malt, but I warm it on the stove with the sugar in to make sure it has dissolved. This is particularly important if you don't use brewing sugar. I have had issues with granulated sugar not dissolving if I just add it straight to the barrel. Four days seems too short. Easy to get...

    Coopers Lager

Any kits, regardless of what they say, should be 3 months. As another poster has stated, get a turn around going. You won't be constantly drinking "unready" beer.

    New home easy brew ideas

I have always found lager and cider to take a long time. I had to leave my cider for 6 months before it tasted any good. It had sulfur smell from it for ages. For a quick turn around, I would choose a low abv bitter. It will ferment quicker, and it will be ready from the bottles quicker.

I don't think I primed the bottles enough. Will it go bad?

I did a level teaspoon per litre bottle. The reason I didn't think it was enough was because I'd always done 500ml bottles before. I didn't really take the larger bottles into account because I didn't want to risk yeast gush. I will just make sure that I leave it at room temperature for a bit...

I don't think I primed the bottles enough. Will it go bad?

I usually leave it about 7 days in primary, but I had to leave it 10 days because of commitments. I tested with a hydrometer and it had finished fermenting. It might have even finished after 7 days. I am not sure. Anyway, I primed with sugar and after 2 days there is not much sediment in the...

How do you make turbo cider?

Where can I buy the yeast for this online. I have heard that some people have used wine-yeast. Is this OK?

How do you make turbo cider?

I have done a few kits; bitter, cider and larger. I am now going to attempt a turbo cider with a friend. Can someone give me, or link me, to a recipe that tells me how to do it. I want to buy some fruit juices from the super market, mix it with water, add yeast, and after a wait, drink some...

Can you put 1.5kg of sugar in a specified 1kg kit?

I have bought a bitter kit that requires 1.5kg, and that made my beer the strength that I like; the one that they sell in Wilkinson specifies 1kg. If I buy off the internet I have to pay postage, and that can be expensive, especially compared to the cost of the kit itself I was wondering if you...

What is actually happening when the beer is maturing?

Also, how long can you keep a beer before it goes off?

What is actually happening when the beer is maturing?

In primary fermentation you are turning the sugar to alcohol. In secondary, again, you are turning the sugar to alcohol; however, this time to preserve it and give it fizz. What is happening as the beer is maturing after secondary fermentation? I bottled my beer, left it 4 days; however, could...

Shall I bottle my beer yet?

I started my definitive Youngs bitter last Sunday afternoon; now being Saturday morning and 6 days later. The instructions say leave between 4 and 8, and test for two consecutive readings on the hydrometer and that it is at least 1.006 before bottling. It has been 1.006 for two days running...

Out of all the Youngs bitter kits, what do people prefer?

I have made a Young's Harvest Yorkshire Bitter; however, I accidentally only added 1kg of sugar when this kit required 1.5kg. It still was fantastic. I am currently fermenting a Young's Definitive Bitter bought from Wilkinson for £6.99. Lets hope it's good value for money. 1kg Sugar. What is...
