Why do you say that, Chippy?
Does all the juice in the UK come from home-grown grapes?

When white grape juice vanished from the shelves many years ago i emailed the big supermarkets they said the crop had failed and as demand was so low they were not going to stock it again that was roughly nine years ago, i have checked online and 100% juice doesnt come up on ASDA ot Tesco sites so i assume its still scarce or they have never restocked it.

Fair enough.

I've never messed around with juice and I'm only doing it now out of curiosity. If you had 5 litres of white, what would you make with it?
I'm still going to make the dessert wine with sultanas and a yeast rich in beta-glucosidase, but I can always get another 5 Litres for about £7 so I might as while give it a go while I'm on a roll.
Incidentally, the white juice is by no means colourless, it;s a light honey colour.

The first juice wine I liked was made with 1 litre of 100% apple juice and 1 litre 100% white grape juice I then started using 1.5 litres apple juice and 1 litre white grape in a demijohn to give it a little extra taste, I did try 4 litres of juice but that was way too much like an alcopop.

I'll be stocking up on white grape juice next summer when I go to France again :-)

Have one bottle of this left. Can't wait to pop it open over Xmas.

You do not use 23 litres of juice you use 12 litres (you can add a little more if you want a stronger taste) basically multiply the recipes below by 5 for a 23 litre FV.

1 litre Red grape juice.
1.5 litre Apple Juice
750g Sugar.
1 tsp Tannin or a mug of very strong black tea. (3 bags stirred every couple of minutes as you put the rest of the ingredients together).....

Not sure what amounts you mean.
Is some water added, or does recipe use, say 12L of grape juice, with rest of the 23L (ie 12L, ignoring mug of tea volume) being apple juice?

It confused me as well. Chippy shows a picture of grape juice and apple juice. I wonder if the rest is made up with apple juice.

5 litre Red grape juice.

8 litre Apple Juice

4 kg Sugar. (or total sugar 5500g)

5 teaspoon yeast (you can get away with 3)

5 teaspoon yeast nutrient

5 tsp Tannin powder (or a big jug of very strong black tea)

Top up with water to 22.5 litres.

Not wanting to labour the point @Chippy_Tea , but why do you add apple juice instead of all grape juice? Just got some grape juice and some apple juice from the supermarket to try (a smaller volume) of the above. Is it to save costs?
By the way, I'm quite interested in the apple 100% apple juice (no added sugar) as it contains 15g sugar per 100 ml. That would make a very hefty cider!.
Again, why add the water instead of just going with the juice?
Thanks in advance. I've made millions of gallons of wines, but from foraged stuff, never from juice.

Many tried using all grape juice as an experiment when the WOW (Worzels Orange Wine )thread first started and it didn't taste good a split of apple and grape juice was much better.

If you use 100% juice it turns out too strong like an alcopop not wine, again tried in the early days and members always went back to basic recipe.

Thanks @Chippy_Tea.
Detail most appreciated. I picked up 5 litres each of red and white juice and 3 litres of apple juice so tomorrow is a day of experimentation.
What joy! Putting juice into demijohns instead of milling, mashing, sparging, boiling, cooling etc. Really looking forward to it. Can't drink wine in pints, though. 🤣🍻

It's on the shelf next to the red at Super U. €1.65 a litre, 10c dearer than the red. I don't know how they preserve it as its not made from concentrate and I can't find any preservatives listed. Possibly pasteurised? Sugar content 170g per litre. I must say that I haven't seen it in the other supermarkets, but then I wasnt especially looking for it.

Where did you get the white juice it used to be like finding hens teeth?
I'd got the idea from other posts, threads, that you were into logistics, possibly a trucker? Perhaps you know someone who knows someone who takes loads to France who wouldn't mind clearing a supermarket shelf for you. No reason to believe it isn't in Germany or Belgium or the Neds. @chthon would probably know.

Actually, it seems not so simple to find white grape juice. This seems mostly limited to organic. All others sell a mix of red and white. Even in France. Auchan does have white grape juice.

Thanks but i gave up on supermarket juice wines many years ago when The Range Store started doing home brew their Red and Rosé kits are amazing and a decent price its a shame they have become so popular its sometimes hard to find any in stock.

Not sure if this is cost effective, for larger batches, compared to wine kits.

I've looked at trying supermarket grape juice, a few times, but 23L wine kit always seemed better value.

Presently, Asda juice, £2/litre, so £46 per 23L. While (reasonable quality) Beaverdale 23L kit, is £45 or £46 but that also includes yeast; maybe oak chips; stabilisers; and finings.
Asda red grape juice is still currently on offer at £3.50 for 2. I’ve been making small batches of red grape juice wine with 100% bottled red grape juice (no apple juice, or water). They have only needed around 340g of sugar added to bring it up to my desired OG. I’ve been adding a small amount of citric acid and half a teaspoon of tannin. I’m very happy with the resulting wine.

I saw this last week. I didn't but it because of the volume it makes. May I ask your bottling system? Do you bottle them all or drink from the demi? I am space restricted so usually stick to one demi at a time.
Thanks

When i first started i made two DJ's at a time then bottled as needed with a cheap syphon tube, i then moved to little bottler on an auto syphon which made it a lot easier i now have a SS conical which i wish i had bought years ago pushing a short length of syphon tube with the little bottler attached onto the top tap makes the job a doddle.

Any chance of a picture / link or 2?
Little bottler, SS conical, top tap.......?
Thanks

I haven't added links as most home brew stores sell them.

Basic syphon

Auto syphon (they come in two sizes DJ and FV.)

1733342986163.png

Little bottler i put the solid tube into the end of the auto syphon tube to make bottling easier.

I now have the ultimate set up (for me) i have a SS conical fermenter similar to the one below, when i finish the wine and degas the sediment drops into the come at the bottom i then attach the tube and little bottler i mentioned above to the top tap and get no sediment in the bottles as the level is below the top tap, not cheap but i wish i had bought it years ago.

Another big plus is its a doddle to clean.
