Hi all
This was my first try at homebrew after twenty odd years. I brewed it middle of May for sixteen days in FV. Like everyone else the initial few days saw mental activity. Covered the floor at one stage with a snakelike yellow foam. I left it outside for a few days to clear then kegged it in a cornie. I gave it a blast of co2 and left it in the warm for a week. Three weeks later I have it on tap and have had a few goes at it. Worked out about six abv and five pints has me away with the fairies:whistle:
It has a massive white creamy head that tastes amazing and has a really intense hoppy taste and smell. It could be clearer, not sure if this is due to being young or me running it through a beer cooler. I also have a lot to learn about the kegging game as I would like it slightly more fizzy. I figure chilling it better would help having read the tips on here.
I intend to do more of this although I have a St peters IPA to do first.

Well it's about time that this brew should be ready according to the instructions, I've followed them to the t, all the equipment was was new , spotless and sterilised. I opened a chilled bottle last night, quite clear, good head, but it didn't taste great, that almost chemical/medicinal taste that some others have mentioned was present .Not sure what to do, will let it sit some more then have another taste in a week or so. Hope it works out, slightly disappointed at the moment.

Just over three weeks at the moment,i've got a couple chilling which I shall leave for another week .

:mrgreen:I went to change the keg to a coopers continental lager and found the Youngs ipa only had one pint left in it. Since I only started it a week ago I figure someone must be visiting my carport at night and helping themselves. My nearest neighbour and I have done a thorough investigation and reckon either the local foxes or aliens are involved. There simply is no other explanation. I've also had a few headaches this week which I am putting down to the proximity of foxes and aliens. I'll keep a close eye out and keep you up to date on developments.

How long has it been conditioning in the bottle for? It tasted best for me after 3 weeks.

That's pretty much how I found it, great after 3 weeks. Had some last week that had been in the bottle for 9-10 weeks and I don't think it was as nice, still a cracking pint but didn't quite have the punch of the 3 week brew

Would be interesting to know if some of the elders on here could identify the chemical twang.

My first youngs IPA has lost the twang... after 6 or more months... it is still present although very feint in a youngs apa. I lost one APA to it being unbearably fingers in your throat bad. However. The youngs AAA I did was so so so so nice. Deffo a kit to do again. No taste in that one. Btw i did all these over time, mixing in wherrys and tc inbetween. They are all fine.

Tis a mystery. Youngs hadn't heard of any problems when i contacted them... well they wouldn't, would they!!

That's why I raved about he AAA although my second effort tasted miles off my first, maybe inconsistency from Youngs but more likely from me .

Barrelled my second batch of American IPA and forgot to put the hops in muslin again so have heavy sediments brew. I decided to do a few bottles and the amount of stuff at the bottom and still floating around after a week. I love this ale and am gutted that I've made this mistake. I guess I'll be pouring it out very carefully!

Another kit I did was Four Finger Jack Pale Ale and was very disappointed with the results. Some has just been undrinkable.

Have you got a tea strainer? Lol
Four Finger Jack is a Bulldog kit if memory serves? My Rajas reward was p*** too! to be fair though I got a refund. :thumb:

Cracked a couple of bottles tonight after 2 weeks standing!!! Couldnt wait and it was a convenient time.

I'm impressed, very much like brewdogs punk ipa but an SG reading at 6.65% makes it a tad stronger!

Only complaint is the amount of sediment! Seem to have loads in each bottle! Any tips on reducing it abit?

Impressed though. Liking the drink!

For every brew I have now started to syphon off from the FV after the primary has substantially finished into a second FV, co-incident with the dry hopping I carry out . This way I reckon I have reduced yeast carry over to bottles to about one third of what it was before, which is important for me since I use 2 litre PET bottles. Usual precautions about sterilised equipment, and to minimise splashing to stop oxygen introduction into the beer.

So after primary you mean the 18 or so days after addib the yeast but before hoping?

Sorry still really a novice with this :)

Thanks

Hi all,

I'm on my second batch of youngs IPA. First one tasted exceptional and I'm hoping to recreate it :)

However, I had a Q on gravity: my measurements are consistently lower than what's reported by others here. For both batches, my OG was 1.046 and 1.044 at 22C (others here seem to get more like 1.054-1.056).

So, my theory is that my hydrometer (the one that comes with the Young's IPA kit) is simply miscalibrated?

However, another factor: on my first batch the FG was 1.002 (giving 6.0%) others seem to get more like 7.5% (and a much larger change between OG and FG). So not only is there a shift of absolute values, but the relative values also don't match others.

This is important to me because I measured the gravity on the second batch at 15 days and got 1.000 again giving a (low?) 5.9%

OK - a lot of detail above - but my question is: Do I have *both* a dodgy and hydrometer *and* is my fermentation not actually finished.

Will check SG again tonight (day 17)

Slightly off topic I fear; however I am torn between doing the Youngs IPA and the Youngs APA premium kits, has anyone done both and able to give a fairly basic comparison in terms of taste, hop character, bitterness, which is best (subjective I know!)?

Cheers fellow brewers!

Just an update, at day 17, gravity was still bang on 1.000 watched for 1 min 45 with no bubbles. So I've gone ahead and bottled it. Fingers crossed I haven't made a bomb!

Not really a fair comparison but I found a bottle of APA in my stash from March but cracked it open just for scientific research comparison reasons, honest Mrs.
Tasted very nice but not quite as good as I remember, seem to recall drinking this quite 'young' . I would be more than happy getting this served up to me in my local instead of the lukewarm slops that is the usual fare. Not much of a hop punch and not really that bitter but still a nice smooth tasty pint

Then I got an IPA out that has been in the bottle for 5 weeks, bloody hell it's like chalk and cheese. Massive burst of fruity flavour and a real punch of hops - what a pint!! I really like these Young's kits as they are ready to drink very early on,they don't benefit from being left a couple of months in my opinion, no messing about just quaff the lot.I've done most of the Festival and St.Peters kits but none of them taste as good as the Young's after a few short weeks

Don't get me wrong, the APA is very nice but this was left too long.Going against all homebrew reasoning it doesn't get better with age.Whichever you choose you'll end up with a great pint, you can't go wrong with either
Righto, that's about as sober as I'm gonna be this weekend as I've got a stash of New World Saison ready for guzzling

Have a good weekend
