I think you are being a bit inaccurate about that. It's more the plethora of high tech we are having attached to the vulnerable front and rears of most cars that's the problem.

How many +50k cars do you see on the roads nowadays? Well the answer is A LOT. The prevalence of company car schemes and the lease culture means more people are paying a moderate monthly sum to drive about in a car they could never afford to actually 'buy'.
And what do those cars have fitted?

Well matrix led headlights (grand a pop)
Radar fitted to the front grill/bumper (grand a pop)
Cameras and parking and blind spot sensors (add in a plastic bumper and that's a grand a pop)

So even a simple prang that in the olden days (10 years ago) would have been a grand for a bumper, grill, headlight, maybe a wing crease ironing out and some paint matching) is now a 5 grand repair
You also have some cars trying so hard to maximise interior space that the engine and cooling is shoved as close to the grill and behind the bumper as possible, so a simple bump can also damage the cooling radiator, oil cooler, gearbox cooler and Aircon heat exchanger. That will be another 5 grand....

Then add in anything over 15mph will probably result in the airbag going off, all the seatbelt tensioner firing and the collapsing crush tubes on the front chassis subframe squishing in, resulting in the engine moving about knackering the gearbox and drive shafts and probably knack'ing the adaptive dampers and front suspension, totally deforming the bonnet and both front wings, then you are writing off even a new car worth 50k

Good point. That's a very good point about leasing. The value of the on road stock will have shock up.

And yet again technomadness. I am in no doubt we make things too complicated.

It's no wonder the classic defender holds its money.

We will have price crash on cars by end of year, beginning of 2025. Might have a knock on effect.
Another issue is cars are easy to steal. Also motorbike insurance is usually cheaper because they don't get used as much.

Spot on, our first juke 64 plate, someone reversed into it in a cycle shop car park and cracked the front bumper, luckily the guy came in the shop asking who owned it, total cost of repair £6,300 i never knew how big a front bumper could be it's the whole front on a juke even round the head lights

Mine went up £200-00 this year after getting 4 points off the Welsh gestapo last year, coming back in a couple of weeks, so if your in Pembrokshire and are behind a juke doin 18mph i will say sorry now :laugh8::laugh8::laugh8::laugh8::laugh8::laugh8::laugh8:

Try adding loads of additional mature drivers. I shaved another £400 off my daughter's insurance by adding my wife as well as me plus my brother and a mate.

My sons quotes have shot up to over £800 more than the car is worth and that is with 12 months no claims

This is f******g crazy -

26 year old in a 16 year old Corsa 1.2 (worth about £500 max) with 1 year no claims

Hardly surprising there are so many uninsured drivers on our roads.

I got my renewal through 100% increase I said no way shopped about got it cheaper than last year and better cover ie no battery recovery etc.
It seems insurance companies are at it perhaps time for tighter regulations or look at some way to make it viable for younger drivers before the skill is lost to younger generations

Crazy. You think for a £500 car TPFAT would make more sense
I think they are keeping all prices high so as not to lose too much money and to take choice away, it stinks when you use comparison sites there is little difference in prices its not competition they are taking the ****, he has managed to talk his current insurer down below his lowest quote on a comparison site so it looks like he is going to stay with them.

There is only a handful of insurance brokers, these companies on comparison websites are all buying from the same people.

Yeah, I spent half a day going down a list on a comparison site, being told by each subsequent website I needed to call them with more information, only to be kept on hold for an hour and then cut off before anyone answered. It turned out they were all subsidiaries of Aviva. I stood to save £400 though so couldn't let it lie. Ended up "only" saving £200 with Esure.

Side note, Admiral wanted to put an extra £100 on the house insurance just last week, up from £200 to £300, switched to Tesco on a comparison site and got it for £188. Still a massive faf though and cancelling the old one too way longer than ordering the new one. The live chat person didn't seem to have the script for my "I've already bought insurance elsewhere" and just kept making me lower offers to be presumably double insured with them, what a cheek, if they'd started with only a £50 increase I probably would have just let it renew.

Yes I found insurers take the **** with initial quotes it's criminal should be outlawed the price should be the price.
Admiral tried to get me to take house insurance said big benefit if take both yes car dropped a bit house was 3 times what I pay no thanks

I never give them a chance to haggle down. I ring up and say you had the cheek to give a stupid renewal and already bought elsewhere, if you valued me, you would have given me the best price straight away.

never give them a chance to haggle down.

The only reason I do is to save me having to go through all the questions and answers again, if they can beat the lowest quote I get on comparison sites I stay with them.
