Cornwall policeman who took dead person's cash is sacked

A police officer who took more than £100 from a dead person's house has been sacked for gross misconduct.
The unnamed officer "removed £105 for safekeeping", said Devon and Cornwall Police after a disciplinary hearing.
"However, he later treated this money as his own" and only returned it after "a considerable delay", said the force.
The disciplinary panel said he had breached standards of behaviour concerning honesty and integrity, and dismissed him without notice.

Colleague 'misled'
The officer, who was granted anonymity, was also barred from policing after the two-day private hearing on 28 July, said the force.
It said in a statement after the hearing that, in June 2018, the officer "attended an address in Cornwall" where a person had died.
"In the normal course of his duties, he removed £105 cash for safekeeping. However, he later treated this money as his own," it said.
"The officer failed to properly secure the potential exhibit and the cash was later removed from its approved place of storage.
"A fellow officer was misled as to the whereabouts of the money and there was a considerable delay before it was returned."
Det Supt Paul Kessell, the force's head of professional standards, said after the case that the officer had "undermined" the trust of the public and the police.
"His actions fell below the standards of behaviour that we all expect from a police officer, and this type of behaviour will not be tolerated," he said.

Mounds of rotting waste dumped under motorway bridge in Wirral

Mounds of rotting waste have been dumped under a M53 motorway bridge in Wirral.

It is estimated that nine large truck loads of rubbish were left near the Junction One retail park at Bidston Moss in Wallasey. Pictures from the scene showed at least six separate piles of waste had been fly-tipped at the location over the weekend. It seemed to consist mainly of decaying household waste, with tyre marks still visible in the ground.

Wirral Council have called it a 'disgraceful' and 'extreme' example of fly-tipping - and say they are working to identify who is responsible

A spokesperson said: "This is significant amount of rubbish dumped on council land which will now also need to be properly disposed, which will take time and considerable cost.

"We also urge anyone, for example people walking nearby or have dash-cam footage of vehicles dumping rubbish, or who has information about the fly-tipping, to report it."

It was spotted on the M57 yesterday and the driver was reported for using a vehicle in a dangerous condition and the vehicle was prohibited.

The UK government department overseeing the phasing out of diesel cars still relies on them for its own fleet.
Figures obtained by the BBC show the Department for Transport operates 1,234 cars - 672 run on diesel, 63 on petrol, with the rest electric or hybrid.
The sale of new diesel and petrol cars is to be banned from 2030, under plans to tackle climate change.
The department said it was committed to switching to greener vehicles.
A spokesperson added it had "already exceeded" a government-wide target to electrify more than a quarter of its fleet by next year.
But a campaign group said the government should lead by example - and the figures would make it harder to persuade the public to switch vehicles.

Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show the DfT and the four executive agencies it oversees had 1,234 vehicles as of last month.
