I'm thinking of starting with some brewing, but am really mainly interested in the Belgian beers (Achouffe, Westmalle, Chimay etc.). How different are these from the English beers to make and is anybody in the North East making these beers for me to have a peek at how to make them? Hope so!

Principles are exactly the same as english ales, just different temps (usually higher fermentation temps for belgian beers) and belgian beers tend to rely on the use of more sugar, If you can brew british beer you can do belgian beer.

Thanks all! Justbri - from what I read on Dutch and Belgian fora, the Belgian beer starter kits get better by using a separate yeast starter pack (don't really know what it means but it might be interesting to try next time, although I'll I'm sure the current one will be great, I'll send you a pm to meet if that's ok). To get more 'local' knowledge you could visit for example http://www.hobbybrouwen.nl/forum/, which has an English section as well.

Anytime mate, you may also find me in one of the many real ale establishments in newcastle
