You’d save a few quid if you moved the stove to the left on your sketch and only had a straight flue. The 45 degree elbows used to be expensive.

If you find a stove with a 5inch outlet, then the flue is cheaper than 6inch diameter flue.

Twinwall flue is more expensive than single skin, but it keeps the flue gases warmer, and you will burn less fuel in the long run.

Yeah I did look at that but the extension was two rooms each with a set of patio doors but we had it knocked through into one room. The bit of wall separating the sets of doors is three feet wide at most and has a power point on it. As we only use one set of doors regularly we have a sofa in there and it would be too close.

I always want to build a Holz Hausen.

I started this one earlier this week.

Its 6ft in diameter. The second layer of outer rim logs to readjust the inward tilt of the outer wall is around 18inches off the ground. My eventual aim is build it 5ft high at the edge, and around 6ft at the centre.

I started trying to build a central flue, but found it too difficult to maintain. I thought it would help the stack to breathe.

I’m out of cut and split wood at the moment.

Resurrecting this log burner thread....I've just ordered mine!
A local supplier we've known for decades, small family firm and literally 5 minutes from my house! Not the cheapest or the dearest out of the many quotes I got.
At the same time we're having radiator moved, all floor removed in extension, kitchen and hall and tiled plus the wall behind where the fire will sit tiled to make a feature of it.

You won't regret it if you can get a reliable supply of properly seasoned wood.
What wood burner did you get?

I've just ordered a load of smokeless coal ready to keep me warm while working from home over winter, also need to move some wood from outside where it has been seasoning for a couple of years

A good idea while you have the heating system open is to get a proper “flush” done. Maximise the heat and efficiency from your heating system to save money in the long run.

Its also worth retrofitting a canister filter to your combi boiler, if it doesnt already have one.
Ensures all the scale and tat that results in needing to chemically flush the whole system isnt required in future, and you can literally spin the old one off and put a new filter on every couple of years to keep everything in tip top condition.

Update...finally managed to secure a floor tiler! Log burner man is doing flue installation 3/4 Nov,tiler in w/c 7 Nov. for about a week, then hearth and burner fitted after that.
This week I'm log hunting...my 8x4 lean-to greenhouse is now empty so that's where they'll go.
Couple of weeks of upset and the dreaded painting etc but can't wait!

We are now waiting until next summer as we may need the money we put to one side for getting the chimney opened up and the stove fitted for other things the way things are going, i like my coal fire and would gladly keep it but SWMBO hates it as it makes so much dust, at least we don't have gas as our only option.

Chippy,

If you get the duster and pledge out, and give it the odd tickle around, then you’ll keep your coal fire forever.

But be aware, it’s the start of a slippery slope!

Na i learned many years ago to make a pig's ear of cleaning and then SWMBO made me stick to home brewing and driving her around (she doesn't drive) and she looks after the rest, i do wash up and hoover but that's about it.
