Good mix of people, some nice pubs,decent music scene (ok maybe more in the past) and not up itself like some other more desirable' towns.

I would say St Awful (Austell) but it's fairly small and i'm sure not many have had the pleasure so i'm going for Luton, an awful place.

They've knocked down and rebuilt that central awful part of Denny, and there's a huuuge new smart housing development, the high school was also knocked down and a shiny new one built about 10 years-ish ago too.

It's been a good few years since I've been back tbf, and as you say it has much improved. On reflection, given the position of the poor brave souls in Ukraine right now, I don't think we can be too sniffy about where we live.

Yarmouth was dog-rough when I was last there a long time ago; maybe it's improved, but few seaside towns in the UK have. Peterborough is my home town, but I haven't lived there since the 70s. Everyone I know says, it was better back then, but then again, people always say that. In this case, I kinda think they have a point, though. No 'proper' pubs in the city centre, for a start. See also, Nottingham. Was that on the list, can't remember. You could make a case, though.

It's all a matter of perspective. I live not far from Aldershot, no 37 on the list, and yes it's not great but it's full of army bases so it wouldn't be.
One place not on the list that I would nominate is St George's Hill Woking. Its full of multi-million pound houses and completely gated off from the rest of the world with security guards ect.. Over a quarter of the houses here are owned by super rich Russians. I would rather live in Aldershot any day.

From the other side of the world I'm intrigued. What makes a place ******. Is it crime rates, employment opportunities, climate, a feeling of menace, other?
Asking cos I've been to some of the places mentioned and quite enjoyed it...

Blantyre is pretty grim, got even worse when the miners club burned down, it was it's one shining light. At Christmas the main streets lights are 50 years old and a lot of the bulbs have blown, just looks sad. It's so bad missionary's from Malawi go their. No wonder David Livingstone got out.
