my thinking was if he's seriously gunna get through a keg in a week, by the time the tap stops flowing from lack of gas, you could just open the lid to let air in and let it free flow... the downside to this is as soon as you do this, you'll need to drink it within a week. but this is quite a convenient timescale based on consumption rates and considering it'll be about the second day before the tap slows from lack of gas.

i say try one barrel without the S40 lid and gas... see how he goes especially if you're on a budget, then if you're having trouble it's only £3 for another lid with an S30 fitted, plus the cost of a gas bottle etc to convert the keg.

At the check out specify store pick up and which store you want.
You should get a call to say its arrived but in my experience if you haven't had communication in 5 days give the store a ring ;)

bonus , theres a home brew shop right next door aswell
cheers mate

whats wrong wiht going to wilkos and getting the brewmaster starter kits for around £20, then put some extra beer kits in as well...got what he wants and saved some money as well!!!....victorian bitter by brewmaker is a winner by the way..just look on wilkinsons website, or pop in their shops mate!!

cheers falafael
just had a look on there and priced up the seperate bits that the brew buddy contains, not including the beer kit it works out at 13.96 and i imagine i wouldnt need 3 of everything and i think it might be better to get him 3 different 3kg beer kits just incase hes not too keen on that one
i dont want to give him any reason to not like the beer otherwise the kit could just end up sat in the loft after the first run
im happy with the price for all the bits he will need so il just get the 2 kit recommendations and get him a voucher so he can choose the 3rd kit himself and buy the co2 caps and cylinders a week or so later himself

I think the 3kg kits can be overhyped a bit and Muntons has a regrettable history of being a bit hit and miss with regards starting and finishing gravity (expected alcohol). The Coopers kits in my experience are superior to the Muntons 3kg kits providing you make your kits up with Spray Dried Malt Extract. I believe this to be a better option than a 3kg kit because you're less likely to get any "homebrew twang" from Spray Dried Malt than you are from a kit containing a high amount of Liquid Malt Extract. Liquid Malt Extract is prone to darkening in the tin and picking up that "homebrew twang" more so than Spray Dried Malt. These are just my findings and I know Muntons is very popular but my own experience with them was hit and miss whereas Coopers was consistently excellent.

Brupaks is another very reliable kit manufacturer who do 3kg kits.

well ive just been into town to buy the first kit so he wont have as long to wait as il be starting it in a minute
he didnt have any of the suggested 3kg kits so i ended up going for a milestone lions pride kit , anyone tried it? he said he doesnt drink anything other than home brew so couldnt really suggest what would be a bit like mcewans from his stock
i found out its only 3.6% which is 1% less than he normaly drinks thats the only thing he might not be keen on :drunk:
the bloke in the shop done me a fermenting bin, syphon, air lock thingy,100g vwp and the lions pride 3kg kit for 30 quid thats actualy cheaper than wilko`s so il buy everything from there instead as i doubt theres much different in overall price
on a downer though wilko has sold out of the beer kegs so im hoping his wont cost much more as the ones on the wilko site seemed pretty cheap from what ive seen elsewhere

I am pretty sure that the keg that wilkos sell (it's a Youngs one) only has a pressure relief valve and not an injector valve, you would need a seperate lid and vlave to do that.

yea your right trunky
we was just going to buy him 3 of them then he can buy the co2 lids/cylinders seperate himself to keep the original costs down as we wasnt expecting to have to buy 3 kits when i first thought of getting him it
hopefully the local shop will do us a good deal on them or we might just buy 2 pressurised kegs and put the 3rd in bottles until he buys another

just bought the rest of the kit i needed apart from i need one more keg unless we just bottle the last one
decided to dip a toe in the world of the dark art and buy some extra`s so bought 100g of fuggles hops,500g of medium spray malt and 1kg of beer kit enhancer
he didnt have any safale s-04 yeast but il order some online to try out for the next 3 batches
paul bought some newcastle brown yesterday so i got a samsons newkie brown kit and a geordie yorkshire bitter kit
il order the recomendations for the next lot online its just i wanted to get it all started monday so he wont have to wait as long for his first pint
not sure which kit to use the hops in though probley the yorkshire bitter?

the lions pride apears to be going ok , no bubbling through the airlock but theres a nice thick froth on top with a bit of browning on top so fingers crossed that will go ok

realy looking forward to doing the brew with the extra hops though, cant wait, id do it tonight when pauls in bed but itd probley stink the house out and wake him up gagging for a beer
in total ive spent 136.50 on 3 setups including 3 beer kits so not too bad realy considering the 2 kegs came with c02 lids
