What did you brew today?

Made a Doppelbock over the weekend, went ok but I have definitely found the limit of my mash tun, which then impacted efficiency but (luckily?) I also messed up my liquor measuring so I have 18L in the fermenter at the correct gravity where I was expecting 20. looking like a decent brew though, so not all bad.

Think I'll convert the current mash tun to a HLT and get a bigger one for the mash. Then I'll get my other pump set up and have a proper 3 vessel HERMS on the go and finally eliminate the need for buckets.

Bit of a user upper today, an English IPA.
Original plan was to bitter with Admiral but after a fruitless rummage through the freezer I went with Magnum instead, then all Challenger.

Batch #55 English IPA 12L
BIAB no sparge
Total water 17L.
OG 1.056
FG 1.013
ABV 5.6%
EBC 19.3
IBU 51

Extra pale Maris Otter 1.425kg
Munich 1kg
Vienna 840gm
Light Crystal 180gm

Magnum 5gm 60mins
Challenger 10gm 30mins
Challenger 10gm 15mins
Challenger 10gm 5mins

Challenger 20gm 30mins hopstand @80c

Challenger 50gm 3 days dry hop

Chilling now and Verdant to pitch in the morning.

Looks like wind will stop play today. Maybe can start later but not very keen on a late start in the winter.

Have keg hopped the last brew which is a first for me, was disappointing and seems like I under hopped it on brew day.

Headed for Manchester for work tomorrow where they seem to have better weather?

Well....FINALLY got my ar5e into gear!
Yesterday was spent cleaning and organising the kit and checking supplies. A nip to Chester Homebrew was required as I was dangerously low on sanitiser and had to clear out some out of date yeasts I didn't want to faff about with.
Otherwise I was well stocked on the hops I need, chems and malt. As for the malt...I had the hindsight to bag all the base malts in 2kg bags, everything labelled, and store in MM boxes in the cupboard under the stairs.
Strike water on for my ever faithful Tribute clone.
Cooooome Oooon!

Look at the dates! A year to the day, nearly, since the last brew!

It’s a soggy miserable day here. Have made my Bock but not feeling it!

Mostly like last year but I have subbed 50% dark Munich as I have it and I have dropped a couple of percentage crystal as I don’t think it needs it.

Will be 10l keg only, thought about bottling a limited number but haven’t. One of the problems of keg only is that I can only counter pressure fill PET, so only 500ml.

26 minutes in carried out an iodine test as I read a lower mash pH converts the starch quicker. Looks like it's right.

A squeeze of around 35 kg

Been thinking about doing this for a while, and finally got around to it. Weighed the spent grain in the grain basket, 9.27 kg, less the weight of the grain basket 2.5 kg =6.77 less the total weight of grains used 5.10 kg leaves me with 0,32 litres per kg of grain loss.

Just a note - I think you are missing a factor in your spent grain water absorption calculation. You need to subtract the actual extract from the grain in weight terms.

I also made some interesting measurements during my full volume mash yesterday but I always feel I need more…it just opens more questions.

Why is the Carapils a late addition it’s not a dark malt?
