Beerhawk advent calendar day 17 - a tremendous Tripel
Sounds grand!Wow the sweetness of this beer is the first thing that hits you. Followed by the thick mouthfeel and a very slight maltiness that again gives way to lots of sugar. A bit sweeter than I would have imagined and at 14% I expected less sweetness in the finish
A bit about the beer from the website
A hugely strong, sweet and spicy Doppleback from Austria's Schloss Eggenberg Brewery. Samichlaus is quite a rarity. It's brewed on only one day of the year, St. Nicholas Day, December 6th and is then fermented and matured for ten months before bottling. Among the strongest beers you'll find this is an ale of stunning complexity. It's sweet, spicy and warming with a long lingering finish.
It’s everything they say it is though. Bed after this I think

We've been going through bottles of this over the past few weeks (lovely in coffee/hot chocolate too) whilst it's been on sale for £10 a litre. Now I'm hopelessly addicted they've put the price up.Starting with something a bit different tonight
Very very very sweet. Like they just added a lot of sugar and the yeast didn’t manage to get through it allSounds grand!
There’s probably some truth in that!Very very very sweet. Like they just added a lot of sugar and the yeast didn’t manage to get through it all
Very disappointed in it to be honest. Now I know why it’s only brewed once a yearThere’s probably some truth in that!
DJ, I see the problem straight away - its a 2022 beer - I've had a 3 and 5 year old beer they are both super complex, if you still have a bottle left leave it for a couple of years.Wow the sweetness of this beer is the first thing that hits you. This was the lidl version. Haven't had baileys for years but the wife seemed to have gone all Xmas mode and bought some. I plan to put it in hot chocolateWe've been going through bottles of this over the past few weeks (lovely in coffee/hot chocolate too) whilst it's been on sale for £10 a litre. Back from some Xmas shopping, started off with a few glasses of this Chinook and Cascade White IPA I kegged 6 weeks ago.View attachment 79432
Now having an old classic, Speckled hen. Used to see the Morland plaques all around Oxford, now it's brewed by Greene King but still a nice pint.

I don’t remember ever drinking any of these and I think I only ever went to Oxford once for a wedding many years ago. I may have missed out!View attachment 79458
And who now remembers having beers from the alternate houses in Oxford from its own brewery, Morrells?
And look, @Hazelwood Brewery , the front mat is for their Brown Oxford Ale!

Yeah I looked into it and it seems that they are for keeping. I couldn’t equate the taste of the beer with the description as it was just cloyingly sweet and very little else. Ah well. It’s finished nowDJ, I see the problem straight away - its a 2022 beer - I've had a 3 and 5 year old beer they are both super complex, if you still have a bottle left leave it for a couple of years.
