Beerhawk advent calendar day 17 - a tremendous Tripel

Wow the sweetness of this beer is the first thing that hits you. Followed by the thick mouthfeel and a very slight maltiness that again gives way to lots of sugar. A bit sweeter than I would have imagined and at 14% I expected less sweetness in the finish

A bit about the beer from the website

A hugely strong, sweet and spicy Doppleback from Austria's Schloss Eggenberg Brewery. Samichlaus is quite a rarity. It's brewed on only one day of the year, St. Nicholas Day, December 6th and is then fermented and matured for ten months before bottling. Among the strongest beers you'll find this is an ale of stunning complexity. It's sweet, spicy and warming with a long lingering finish.

It’s everything they say it is though. Bed after this I think

DJ, I see the problem straight away - its a 2022 beer wink... - I've had a 3 and 5 year old beer they are both super complex, if you still have a bottle left leave it for a couple of years.

Still sorting fishing gear, tying hooks, an old habit from match fishing days. If I started match fishing again I would end up divorced. I don't think the wife ever believed, 'the match went into extra time' when I came home at 10.30 pm reeking of grog, maggots and ground bait.
An ordinary bitter to start the evening.

A robust porter next, we have one guest at Christmas who loves Porter, she will enjoy this one.

We've been going through bottles of this over the past few weeks (lovely in coffee/hot chocolate too) whilst it's been on sale for £10 a litre. Now I'm hopelessly addicted they've put the price up.
This was the lidl version. Haven't had baileys for years but the wife seemed to have gone all Xmas mode and bought some. I plan to put it in hot chocolate

Back from some Xmas shopping, started off with a few glasses of this Chinook and Cascade White IPA I kegged 6 weeks ago.View attachment 79432

Now having an old classic, Speckled hen. Used to see the Morland plaques all around Oxford, now it's brewed by Greene King but still a nice pint.

And who now remembers having beers from the alternate houses in Oxford from its own brewery, Morrells?
And look, @Hazelwood Brewery , the front mat is for their Brown Oxford Ale!

I don’t remember ever drinking any of these and I think I only ever went to Oxford once for a wedding many years ago. I may have missed out!

Our last night's effort (a bit late, I know).
My preprandial Pils, a knock-down spotted on my annual Christmas trip to Waitrose to buy Madeira (daughter's favourite tipple).
A refreshingly bitter Pils, like it says on the tin.
The Burgundy, bought from the vingeron when on a trip around France a few years ago, is to go with SWMBO'Ds duck breast (not shown), but in reality to accompany my Pheasant casserole (shown).
I rarely actually cook, but as I had butchered the road-killed bird (after a week or two hanging) it was my job to do for myself.
The liquid added to deglaze the frying pan was mainly alcoholic as well and contained;
Valdespino full rich sherry,
Savenniere dry white wine,
Oak matured mead.

Wonderful flavours in there.

Those matts bring back a few memories, Morrells beers were a staple of my youth.
I picked up a Dave Lines book recently which has a recipe for an old favourite, Varsity bitter which I've been meaning to try, as well as another couple of local ales Old Hooky and Brakspears special.

Yeah I looked into it and it seems that they are for keeping. I couldn’t equate the taste of the beer with the description as it was just cloyingly sweet and very little else. Ah well. It’s finished now
