Using Spent Grain

Probably the easiest way to use spent grain is for composting.. but I'm very interested to hear of other ways to use them.
I'm sure many of you have more innovative ways to prevent it from going to waste.. or maybe a recipe or two to share..

In truth I don't know what she does with them, but I've noticed that if you keep it hanging around too long, it quickly begins to smell, so I imagine no.

Partially dry the grain in the oven. Combine with egg, flour, peanut butter and coconut oil. Roll out and cut into little biscuits
and bake at 160c for about an hour or until baked dry.

It makes bloody loads too. I only ever use a couple of handfuls of grain and the biscuits last weeks. Wee dog goes mad for them.

I've got a dehydrator and am going to try drying the grains next brewday to use as flour. Will report back. I tried once but the temp was too low so they went sour. There are tons of recipes on this site using spent grain flour...

I've just received my first eggs in return for some spent grain. A very happy exchange. A quick 'advert' on a community forum should reveal some local chicken keepers quickly if you don't know of any nearby.

Chickens and cattle love spent grain because it is a bit sweet. Brewing doesn’t remove all the sugars from the malted barley. Some farmers spend big money on buying spent grain from breweries.

+1 for feeding to the hens. I tip it in to their run as soon as it has cooled down and it is usually gone in around a day (4 hens).

That's good going. Mine never get through it all so some ends up on the compost bin

Maybe they get help from the wild birds then - it’s not in the enclosed run!
