Iv got my hands on 2 cans of malt extract, their out of a kit for a partial grain kit. My question is, I want to use these cans in my next brew witch will be a master pint Czech pilsner. Will I need Both cans or just one?

I don't know what master pint is. (is it a kit)

I am not sure about using two in there because pilsner is obviously made with light pilsner grain.. whereas malt extract I assume what you have will be a pale malt so it will darken it and give it some more malty flavour??

Yes master pint is a kit. The 2 cans of malt extract have come from a lager partial grain kit. So if i was to use just 1 can will I need to add any additional sugars?

in that case its probably okay, not made a lager but you'd assume the extract was made with lager malt.. how big are the tins?? the 1.5kg ones are probably enough, the kit is 1.6kg.

The problem with liquid extract is you open the tin you need to use the lot.. I think 4.6kg of extract will be too much.. what I woudl do is use one tin and see what your gravity is, it will probably get you a 5% beer I would have thought you could bung a few 100 grams of sugar in if you want to boost it???

Yeh ill go with one tin with what your saying. I assume the tins are 1.5kg they have no label. Their pretty big though. Iv some dried spray malt so if I need it ill bung a couple 100g of that in. Cheers buddy

I have an empty Coopers 1.7kg can minus the top which was removed to get at the contents. The can weighs 150g, so all up was probably about 175g with top.
Why not weigh your full cans and subtract 175g to get at approx contents weight.

What Cov says. Add one tin, mix well, measure the gravity, add some sugar of you want a bit more gravity.

I'll be pitching that yeast I harvested last week in this brew tonight. Iv took it out of the fridge to bring the temp down to room temp before I pitch in. Should I do anything with it before I pitch it or should I just pour the hole thing in? Its not a big jar but iv pictured it against a small 100g Vaseline pot

Leave it alone to settle out, then pour most of the wort off just before you pitch the yeast, leave about 1 cm wort above the yeast in the jar. Swirl the jar to mix the remaining wort and yeast, and pour it all into the beer.

Sorry bud but i don't understand? I'm doing a kit tonight so my wort will already be in my fv. Don't think iv understood lol

I'm talking about wort in the jar. Assuming there is some. When you harvest yeast you should include some of the beer it was in. The yeast will settle out, leaving beer above it.

Oh right yeh. Theirs about 1cm sat on top now

If the rest is solid sediment it will be too much yeast probably. See how far it settles out. I reckon you want about half the jar of thick yeast slurry.

You mean all the yeast? Tbh using yeast slurry is all about calculated guess work. Estimation. I have no idea how much active yeast is in that jar. It depends on a number of things. Making a yeast starter from it is a better way to go about it, but not essential, I pitch slurry if it's recently harvested. By all means pitch all the slurry, it may be technically too much, but the consequences of over pitching are less noticeable than from under pitching. And difficult to notice at all, probably, unless you made two brews side by side. Some people pitch brews onto the whole sediment from their last brew, so the consequences are not serious, I guess. I was going to say use the whole jar, but then considered the amount I pitch.

So basically don't worry. Lob it all in by all means. Better to be over than under.

How long would you expect it to begin to ferment? And at what point would you decide to pitch fresh yeast if no fermentation occurs?

Within 24 hours. I'd pitch more after about 2-3 days.

But it will ferment, it's only a week old. And probably within a few hours you will see signs of fermentation.

So its been 24 hrs and iv got a tiny krausen on top of the brew. :( I was thinking id of seen something abit more active but no. So shall I give it another couple days then pitch fresh yeast ???? I dunno as iv never used harvested yeast.
