The information I have certainly implies that . . . I can't say for certain without doing a DNA analysis of each strain, but the source I have is reliable

So there would possibly be no difference between pitching dried us-05 or a liquid yeast starter ? Is there a yeast you would reccomend for hoppy pale ales ?

Yep. I wouldn't bother with wlp001 myself unless i was making at least 10bbl. Price isn't worth it compared to the dried uk-05 (see what i did there...)

I've used both extensively and the US-05 consistently attenuates significantly further and doesn't taste as clean, I tend to get a bit of an alcohol note from it. I now never use US-05 but use WLP001 quite a bit as the beers turn out much better. They are not necessarily genetically identical and the drying process can change the characteristics of yeast.

That said I do get good results from a re-pitch of US-05.

As for the cost I split a tube 3 ways and store them in the fridge, just from one of those splits I have made 30 gallons of beer through 3 generations.

And that was a point I was going to make this morning :D Personally given the opportunity I would always prefer to use liquid yeast rather than the same yeast dried.

I have been meaning to to a side by side with the two yeasts, I think it would be a good experiment.

Despite my slagging it is clearly possible to make great beer with US-05. I tried Dunfie's Punk IPA clone with US-05 and it was great. There is no doubt in my mind though that when I make beer with US-05 it doesn't turn out as good as when I use WLP001. It could be for any number of reasons. I would love just to be able to throw a pack of yeast in the wort. Also I think Nottingham makes a cleaner, better tasting beer than US-05.

One last thing, the cost argument is a little less compelling now that Fermentis have put the kibosh on repackaging dried yeast... :x

Have I missed something regarding re-packaged yeast?
Has BarleyBottom and MaltMiller been stopped from splitting packs?? :wha:

I pretty much always use US-05 for my hoppy American beers. But last month I bought Wyeast 1056 and used it on my Cascade Pale Ale. I will harvest that yeast and use it for the foreseeable future. I've always had good luck with 1056 in the past. Then again, US-05 works a champ too.

Yep!

It's never been a practice I've been particularly fond of.
