Understanding ABV

So I’ve just done my first ever Brew! Granted it was Cider but the question applies to Beer too. How do I know (or get a rough idea) how strong something will be?

I did my first hydrometer reading and all I can understand is that it may be sweet can anyone explain and/or make any head or tail of this

That's a 1060, if it ends at 1020 it's a sweet strong cider. One that I'd like :)

It says "Upload a File" and hitting it would give you a dialogue, a standard system dialogue.
