My own Business.

Well the mash for the second brew was on at 5.15pm tonight. The second one is a Traquair House Ale Clone.

It is pretty close to the original except that it has got flaked oats and Wheat malt to make it Mancunian

After last nights mash I think the efficiency will be alot higher again and the ABV higher

Again I did a glucan rest, but this time 18Kg of grain and 40+L of water only just fitted in the 60L mash tun

I am mashing this one at 68c for all the lovely malty goodness.

Well the centre read 67.4

Tomorrow i will sparge at about 9.00am. The first runnings are going to be boiled down and caramalised in my Lidl Jam Boiler (finally found a use for it).

Just caught up with this thread, Good going Greys :thumb:

I shall have to set another record next year make sure nobody beats me ;)

Let;s hope that snail isn't hiding in your taps come sparge time

Thanks Nick. Nowhere near your mammoth brewday, still I am knackered must be my age . But I think you should do a non stop 24hr brew session, only your are mad enough to attempt it.

Overnight mashes are definately the way forward for me it shaves a couple of hrs even taking into account setting up the mash the day before.

Looking forward to tomorrows brew never caramalised the wort before, Hopefully it will keep me warm through the long dark winter nights.

Yes but if I get that efficiency again with tomorrow's brew then I will end up with something 1085ish and I only have 500ml bottles .

Who's the double agent...

Personally I thought it was Moley.

And the blanket was out of the back of a furniture delivery Van.

Outed !!

Nice looking couple of brews though - made me think about an overnight mash for an imperial stout... :hmm:
I always lose efficiency on high gravity brews, this could get some back..

What A Fecking Morning     :( :( :( :(

Mash out was about 57c so only lost about 10 degrees. Started mashing, First runnings great put them aside to caramalise. Then started sparging and all that was comming out was grain  .

Emptied the mash tun found the pipe to the tap had got dislodged fixed it. Started sparging then got a stuck mash no matter what I did I could clear it so I emptied again cleaned everything up and put it back together.

Sparged again Stuck again. Emptied it and put grain through a grain bag and squezzed all the wort out. I again cleaned ou the mash tun and put back to gether then ran some sparge water in and got it to run through. I then got the very dry grain and put it bit by bit back in and started the sparge. I new that this would probably affect efficiency but I new the overnight mash should over shoot it buy a fair few points so not so worried.

Boil nearly up to temp so I took a gravity reading and corrected and I am at 1072 which is around what I wanted.

Lidl Boil is struggling a bit to boil down 2 gallons so I have decreased it to 1 gallon and it is boiling away better.

Sorry no pictures yet. You may get the money shot at the end. :thumb: :thumb:

Looking forward to a beer tonight.

Went From Bad To Worse and back again

Well not that bad I supose. When It can to dropping into the FV I had to stir to keep the strain free of hops (it just blocks up if I don't). Then I knocked the strainer off and for some reason it then bunged up completely. So I had to get the trusty grain strainer bag and sterilise it along with a jug and me and jug 30L into the FV straining it.

I wouldn't have minded as much yesterday in fact i would have expected it as yesterdays brew was AG#13

Ended up at 1077 when corrected which is a little up on what I expected but not as good as yesterdays (thank goodness).

Anyway all done. Used a culture of EDINBURGH SCOTTISH ALE YEAST WLP028 all tucked away. Not using any heating or brewing cupboards in fact both brews are on concrete floors to keep temps down. Both at 21c.

Yesterdays bitter has got a bit lively
