Too much Liquid

I don't know what is happening with my process but i seem to be getting too much wort in to my fermenter. I use Beersmith as my software and have set up my equipment and mash profiles as per the various videos. From what i can see the only thing i can think of is the water/grain ration maybe wrong as an example my last brew i ended up with 27.5lt of wort in fermenter whereas i was aiming for 25lt as this would give me 23lt finished brew(due to height to tap in fermenter) any ideas what could be wrong and what is the correct water/grain ration. At the moment i have it set at 3lt/kg

I'm not sure if the water/grain ratio in the mash makes any difference to final volume (BIAB brewer).

The size of the grain bill obviously affects the amount of water left absorbed by the spent grain though, if that's what you mean then, I think that is a bit high. I use 1lt/kg as a rough estimate, if you overestimate that then you'd end up with more wort in the fermenter.

I assume you did some experiments to calculate boil-off rates and dead space for your equipment?

The grain absorbs 1l/kg. You lose this. I use 2.6 l/kg,the difference plus sparge gives you're pre boil volume,which minus your boil off and any kettle or trub loss gives your fv volume.

OK... You need to know your water losses, so you end up with the right amount of wort... For me with my equipment...

My losses...
1L per kilo of grain, for 4kg of grain losses are 4L
2L mash tun loss
4.5L boil off losses for 60 minute boil (my boil off rate is 0.091L per minute)

So my losses are 10.5L for 4kg grist. I want 22L in the FV, so I add that to the losses, which gives me my starting water quantity. i.e. 22L + 10.5L = 32.5L

As for trub losses... I add in a 2L priming solution at bottling and I always end up with 40-41 500ml bottles... Simples

Your equipment may give different results, but you'll find that with a few brews. The only real variable I have is the grain weight...
