Hi

Ive currently got a Better brew pilsner on the go, brewing with 500g dextrose and 500g hopped light spray malt. I started this on Sat and after taking a reading this morning OG had dropped to 1.017. I want to get this out of my main FV and into a 2nd as i use this for batch priming as it has a tap. Is this too early to transfer or will there still be enough yeast to finish off fermentation if i rack?

Pete

as long as your not bottling yet it's ideal to transfer now , somewhere like 1020 is often a target when to transfer :thumb:

I would wait until the wort is stable for a couple of days at the FG before you transfer. Otherwise the benefit of moving to a secondary FV are somewhat lost.

Two replies and two different opinions...yay that's home brewing for ya.....

The over riding principle for you is... do you need to transfer, do you need that fv now. If so get it transferred it will be fine ( even if you worked the yeast out fully there will always be enough in suspension to be reactivated when a bit more sugar is provided )
I find that 10 days in the first fermenter and then a rack to a 2nd vessel suits me. I can plan ahead what type of fermenter to use initially ( tap no tap etc )
It gives the yeast plenty of time to do its thing and the majority to drop out as trub. I give it a good 7 days or so in second vessel to allow the yeasts to finish off and clear up any by products it has made, and allowing the last bits to drop out of suspension. The wort is usually nice and clear at this stage and can be bottled or kegged with little debris being transferred.
But its all down to you as the brewer and what suits you best. As long as you give the yeasts TIME to do their work and clean up.

i only answered the question that was asked , i myself don't transfer unless i'm planning on leaving brew in fv for over 3 weeks . :D

Cheers for the reply lads. I transfered this yesterday so i could free up my FV with tap so i could bottle my Muntons Gold midas touch.

Checked it this morning and its got a nice frothy head and its slowly still bubling away. I will give it another 3-4 days, take a reading then pop in the cold before bottling.
