I was reading in the Business section of The Times today that SABMiller is considering commissioning floating breweries on ships as a serious proposition for the future of their business. It would be an oil tanker-sized ship with the whole malting, desalination, brewing, bottling and packaging operation onboard.

All I could think to myself was: I wonder who will be the first homebrewer to put a mash tun and a copper in their rowboat.

Moley of course!

Joking aside, I've a vague memory of someone on Jim's doing extract on their narrowboat. Couple of years back now.

Can't really see the reason for it, we are not going to get all that VAT back and the hassles of fresh water etc ...

Now I'd go back to sea for that, those product pumps would be the best maintained in the world, routine rebuild every other day :D

I read a book recently that described one brewer actually building a brewery on a ship during the war years (can't remember if it was WWI or WWII).
At that time beer was a very important food and regarded as essential for the morale of our troops and those at home.
The brewery contained some very tecnologically advanced stuff for the day - de-salination equipment, etc etc. But it took that long to comission the plant, that by the time it was ready to work the war was over

I'll dig the book out later and see if it gives any more specifics.

That reminded me of something someone I used to work with told me. He worked as a cook in the merchant navy and if he was aboard a 'dry' ship he used to hollow out potatoes add a bit of water sugar and yeast and leave them hidden strategically placed around the ship on warm pipes to ferment   . Don't know if it was true or not :hmm: :hmm: but would probably work.
