As lovely a gesture it is, I'm not liking the narrative that the NHS should be treated like a charity. Correctly funded, it wouldn't require kindly charitable gestures.

How about we raise VAT by a few percent and ringfence the increase to provide proper funding for Health and Social Care.

Same goes for food banks. Absolutely horrendous that they have become the norm.

Im reading this critisim (Not of C'ptn Tom himself of course) quite a lot

Good. I hope the message starts to sink in. All of these gestures are fantastic, and it's nice to see how selfless people can be, but let's not let it distract us from the fact that medical and care staff are being placed at risk due to chronic mismanagement and underfunding.

Apropos a discussion I was having earlier with @Covrich about our airports not being shut, well according to several papers today the numbers coming in untested or quarantined is 15,000 per day

"At least 15,000 people a day are flying into the UK without checks on their medical condition, the health secretary admitted yesterday.

Matt Hancock said that the equivalent of 105,000 passengers a week were entering the UK from countries including those with serious coronavirus outbreaks such as the US, China, Spain and Italy. Criticism has mounted over the failure to impose health checks or a compulsory period in quarantine for people arriving at UK airports. The US has banned entry for people from Britain and elsewhere in Europe.

Similarly, how can 2 technicians at the college my sixth form is attached to produce 500 masks for the hospital in a day, WHEN ( I know they now say they have enough but can't ship them) the gov couldn't knock out a decent amount with all the resources at their disposal.

I know there will be some on here who will no doubt have a go at me, and bang out some googled stats etc but this government have arsed this up at every stage from delaying lockdowns, not learning from other countries who were weeks ahead of us, not preparing for essentials but instead focussing on grand schemes which would look good on TV such as nightingale hospitals which cost a bomb and might not be needed, and lying to us continuously. I'm not surprised as it is this government (yeah, labour probably couldn't do any better but we don't know so I can only criticise the government in place).

Here comes the grief.

But some people choose to focus on the fact it's Romanians who have the audacity to respond to OUR GOVERNMENTS call to pick food FOR US. how dare they risk their health and fly to our country to help US.

Is this just another sign that our government are treating the british people with utter contempt. With the airports handling such smaller volumes every one coming in should have some sort of check. The majority of us are doing our bit but we are being let down on several fronts.

I 'm guessing the 'land army' idea never really took off then

"The Government is preparing to launch a Land Army-style “Pick for Britain” campaign to prevent crops rotting in fields, The Telegraph understands, after ministers were urged by farmers to consider deploying Army reservists"

Last night we did a online UK pub quiz with about six others via FB video link. What a hoot and supped my finest, well wobbly when we finished. No idea who won the quiz, just great to chat. Now i've just done facebook video chat with my kids in Norfolk and Perth Aus. There were tears in my eyes chatting while my grandson tried to stand up (1+) and my sons dog bounced all over the place. Last week we all wore digital easter bunny ears, my grandson loved it. :laugh8: There are still some great lifetime fun things you can do and to me it makes what we are all going through bearable. I love my bunny ears!

I cant think of any justifiable reason to keep the airports open, even an economic ones Seeing as though airlines themselves are closing down many of their flights due to lack of people flying. The airports are closing runways for the same reason

This guy puts forward a very plausible reason as to why black and hispanic people are getting hit more severely than white people.
From a medical viewpoint, I hasten to add.

There were some good videos by him posted earlier in the thread.

It looks like most of us could do with a vitamin D boost if thoise figures are anything to go by, i take a daily multivitamin and have for a few years the D is only 5 μg which it would seem is quite low, i suppose as i work outside a lot i may not need more. :confused.:

Judging by the bloodworks done on all my clients (almost all of them are deficient) I think we could all do with more Vit D (and I spend most of my work time outdoors)

Exactly this. I have worked in the NHS as a clinician since 2008. My wife is also an NHS critical care nurse. Sadly, we are pretty much decided on relocating, downsizing and getting out of healthcare entirely.
