Just been reading an interesting article in Ouest France (the local rag) about doctors in italy coming across a strange and particularly virulent strain of pneumonia in northern Italy, even before the first coronavirus case was declared in China. The article doesn't suggest it, but wouldn't it be ironic if the virus started in Italy and was carried back to China by a tourist.

This is the sort of speculation that's not terribly helpful, and there's good reason why the article doesn't suggest it. Everything in the epidemiology so far suggests it came from Italy. Pneumonia is a secondary bacterial infection. I'll believe this story when I see it in a reputable medical journal and not before, but it's possible that there were particularly nasty bacteria circulating in Italy which might contribute to a higher death rate there - but that's different to it being the source of the virus.

It's not speculation it's a report by doctors in Northern Italy. Do you mean "nothing in the epidemiology"? Why is it unhelpful to report what these doctors have found? Why is "wouldn't it be ironic if..." a problem for you?
Pneumonia is not a secondary bacterial infection in this case, it's viral pneumonia as a direct reaction to the primary infection- sure, it doesn't develop into pneumonia in all cases. Is the Milan Institute of Pharmacological Research not authoritative enough for you? Nobody in the report said that Italy was the source of the virus, the report said there was a very strange and very serious strain of viral pneumonia circulating among the elderly as early as November. Dr Giuseppe Remuzzi, Director of the aforementioned institute says that that means the virus was already circulating in Lombardy before we were aware of its appearance in China. He, at least, seems to imply it was the same virus.
It seems to be important to be able to follow the thread of contagion and to identify "patient zero" the first affected patient. Not sure how that would help, but they're on the case.

I'm still more concerned about the economic impact COVID-19 is going to have when it is finally over. The longer it goes on the worse it will be.

Yes there was an article in the Sydney Morning Herald saying Australians were more concerned about the economy than the virus.
Much like the woman I work with. Crying because the shares she'd bought after the election had gone down.
Wanted to know if she'd still get her franking credits (that's an Aussie thing).
And the bloke in work saying the Australian government should step in and help the share market go up.

You might as well link to Alan Jones, a radio shock jock who claims it's just a bit of flu, while broadcasting remotely from his home.
Or Gerry Harvey, who owns electrical stores claiming it's great because he's selling a load of freezers.

But me personally although I've lost a shitload on the stockmarket and it'll put my retirement back.
I'm more concerned about any of my family or friends getting Covid-19.

Lost touch with football scene shortly after leaving Geelong in '68. Might try and find a way of watching some matches on youtube or wherever. It's the game I was brought up on in school and I used to love it. What have the Magpies done to upset you?

I know very little about the AFL, but I thought everybody hated them.

Interest on commercial loans at the moment are bound to be very high as a lot of those firms will still go bust if this drags on. Safe loan = low interest, dodgy loan = high interest.

Depends on whether the rate is 12% flat rate or 12% apr. If Flat rate that is way too high as they do tend to use flat rate I would think it is just that

From what I've read, the US is going to be the next virus hotspot. The US of course isnt in the EU.

It's simply the fact people can (well prior the the virus outbreak) travel anywhere in the world cheaply by plane which has spread it so far and so fast

Yes I agree with that. People are wider traveled in these times but we have many EU workers are working in the UK who travel back to their own countries more often even drive there on a more frequent basis.
I had a polish mechanic who worked for me and by the way a excellent fully Audi/VW trained one at that who thought nothing of driving back to Poland every 3 weeks or so which would not have been done up until recent times and my other Polish friend goes back to Poland at least 4 times a year and their parents come here on major holidays such as Christmas, Easter etc so in my opinion this must add to the issue, I am not saying it is the cause but it must add to the movement caused by cheap airfare etc. However that bubble of cheap airfare may be about to burst with the economic crisis that will follow
