UK economy shrinks record 20.4% in April due to lockdown

The UK's economy shrank by 20.4% in April - the largest monthly contraction on record - as the country spent its first full month in lockdown.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the "historic" fall affected virtually all areas of activity.

The contraction is three times greater than the decline seen during the whole of the 2008 to 2009 economic downturn

I'm no fan of the Tories or a reader/subscriber of the Torygraph but couldn't help seeing this headline for an article posted elsewhere in the online media landscape. This from the assistant editor of the esteemed rag too.....

Britain is a ship of fools heading for the rocks

Let's face it, this current Tory Cabinet was chosen by Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson for their loyalty to the Brexshit project and as such no-one should be surprised how incompetant they have been during this current public health crisis. The magical thinking required to believe in leaving the EU was a good idea is no match for the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 virus.

And if anyone thinks that you can ignore Covid restrictions because you're young, read the NYT about this woman in her 20's who was left with such damaged lungs that she needed a double lung transplant, and still isn't strong enough to breathe with them unassisted. Just horrendous.
Yes I read that the other day.
She was bloody lucky to get a new set of lungs so quick to be honest.
In all honesty the other related issues caused by covid would worry me more than actually getting over Covid.

I read that:
  1. Iain Duncan Smith is telling us that there is no need for 2 metre distancing.
  2. Boris Johnson:
    1. Told us that we've done a great job following 2 metre distancing (and partially rescuing his policies).
    2. Is now looking at "relaxing" the 2 metre distancing rule.
Like many people, I would like to think that any relaxation of the 2 metre distancing rule was based on scientific advice and maintained my safety when out in public; rather than helping to put some more money into a Tory pocket.

BTW, yesterday Tesco announced that the outgoing chief Dave Lewis would be paid a £6,400,000 bonus! That is how hard-up Tesco is after three months of lockdown! :?: :?:

A fellow on the radio stated the other day the following example about the 2m distancing rule.

If you light a candle and stand 2m away from it and try to blow it out with your own breath it barely flickers.

Stand 1.5m away and repeat, it visibly moves.

At a distance of 1m you can blow the candle out.

Draw your own conclusion.

Try it, it works.

What has this decision by Tesco got to do with lockdown did they say there were too skint to pay staff wagers or something similar, my son has been working 4 days a week instead of his normal one day a week at Tesco in Barrow due to staff holidays and sickness and they gave them a 10% bonus for taking on extra shifts.

I think this is a very bad idea unless everyone has to wear a face covering (not necessarily a mask) when outside your own home the problem is how would they police it.

They might as well bring in the 1 meter rule as those that went to the rave below and all the protesters don't seem to care about the risk of a second wave and what that means to all the NHS staff they were all clapping on a Thursday night not long ago. aheadbutt

A police officer was assaulted as more than 500 revellers attended an illegal rave, Staffordshire Police said.

An arrest was made for the alleged assault and for drug-driving, as police tried to disperse crowds in Fradley near Lichfield on Saturday night.

Traffic on the nearby A38 was slowed down and British Transport Police (BTP) officers were called out as the event was closed down.

Cars left abandoned at the site are now being removed.

"An estimated 500-plus people attended who have shown a complete disregard for public safety and the current Covid-19 lockdown restrictions," police said.

Officers were still turning people away who were arriving as they closed the event down.

The abandoned cars, in Brookhay Lane, are causing an obstruction, police said.

The traffic on the A38 was slowed as a precaution, police said, and BTP officers were called out because there is a railway line nearby.

Some of the drivers at our place have to now lone work as the wagons are not wide enough to allow a 2 meters gap, if they relax the rule to 1 meter i would not want to spend 8 hours a day in the cab with someone who may have covid-19 and i am sure the other person wouldn't want to be in there with me.

Our colleagues in the Netherlands always only had a 1.5m rule in place and said it worked fine for them? Their lockdown was far less restrictive than ours by the sounds of it

If the Government are considering changing the minimum social distance to 1.5 or even 1.0m. Does this mean that Bjorn Toulouse visits Sexy Sarah will have to invest in shorter strapons? Or have I got the wrong thread?

We've only ever had a 1.5m rule here in Australia or one adult kangaroo.
I don't go to the shopping centre that much. Mainly just the supermarket.
We've had our restrictions lifted bit by bit over the last few weeks.
Now people don't give a **** about keeping distance.
