As I have previously mentioned, this is not about finding loopholes in the guidance to justify having a day out. aheadbutt

Despite numerous warnings to day-trippers to not visit North Yorkshire this weekend, police have confirmed that they have issued 61 fines this weekend to people who were not following government guidance and were making unnecessary journeys.

31 fines were issued on Saturday to people visiting from West Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and as far away as Kent. 17 fines were issued in Malham alone – with 13 being written in an hour, as day-trippers thronged to the North Yorkshire village.

A further 30 fines were issued on Sunday, with officers issuing six fines in Brotherton to people gathering to go off-road biking. Other unnecessary journeys included a man travelling from Yarm to Wakefield to pick up paint and two men travelling to Bradford to view a car.

Speaking about this weekend’s enforcement Assistant Chief Constable Mike Walker said: “Up until this weekend, the vast majority of both residents and visitors to North Yorkshire have acted responsibly and in accordance to government guidance and abided by the rules around only travelling for essential reasons.

“However, we are definitely starting to see a turning of the tide in some areas, with some blatantly ignoring the reason why we have been in a lockdown situation for the past five weeks and making a decision to no longer stay home and save lives.

“When it comes down to it, that’s what we are trying to do here – save lives. We are trying to stop the spread of a deadly virus which has, as this time, claimed the lives of over 20,000 people in this country and thousands more worldwide. The police have their role to play in protecting both the public of North Yorkshire from the spread of COVID-19 and our valuable health service and we remain fully committed to continuing this task.

“However, we need the support of the public and for some to realise and understand why they are being asked to continue to abide by the stay home rules. This virus is not yet beaten, the threat of a second peak of infection is very real, as we have heard from the Prime Minister himself this morning. That’s why we must keep on going – to protect our love ones; our children, partners, parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters.

“As I have previously mentioned, this is not about finding loopholes in the guidance to justify having a day out. This is about keeping your elderly, vulnerable grandmother safe, your asthmatic child safe or your diabetic father safe. So please think about why it’s important to you personally to stop the spread of this virus. Think about the personal reason, or the family member you are staying home for and if you can’t do it for the health and safety of the nation, please do it for them.”

Stupidity and selfishness of some is ridiculous. See there was a story about someone from Edinburgh fined in Dorset. aheadbutt

A large delivery of safety equipment for key workers has arrived in Lancashire, and is heading to priority services, including adult social care. #PPE It's happened thanks to funding from our colleagues

While this is good news it's weeks too late. My brother's other half is a district nurse in Southport. She and her colleagues have been sorely lacking PPE since this started. She was tested for COVID on Friday with a positive result returned on Saturday, which almost certainly means that my brother and their kids will have it too.

Just as we can see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel and easing lockdown is being discussed idiots like this decided the rules aree not there for them, they should give them penalty points if caught driving without a very good reason.

Sunak unveils 100% state-backed loans for small firms

Small firms are to get access to 100% taxpayer-backed loans after they raised concerns about slow access to existing coronavirus rescue schemes.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak told the House of Commons the scheme would start next week, offering firms loans up to £50,000 within days of applying.

It aims to unlock a backlog of credit checks by banks amid fears many small firms could fold before getting loans.

The scheme requires filling in a two-page self-certification form online.

The loan terms mean that no capital or interest repayments will be due for one year. Instead, the government will pay the interest for the first 12 months.

Banks have come under fire for delays in handing out loans, but have blamed the heavy workload, need to complete the necessary credit checks, and a shortage of staff.

Mr Sunak acknowledged that some small firms were struggling to access credit, and by guaranteeing the full value of the loan up to £50,000 he hopes that banks will allow companies to borrow the funds they need. The new "microloan scheme" would provide a "simple, quick, easy" solution, he told the Commons.

He had come under pressure to underwrite all loans, not just those up to £50,000. But he said he was not prepared to do this as he needed to balance the risk to the taxpayer with the needs of small businesses.

He said: "I've heard some calls for the government to underwrite all our loan schemes with 100% guarantees. I remain unconvinced by the case for doing that universally.

"We should not ask the ordinary taxpayers of today and tomorrow to bear the entire risk of lending almost unlimited sums to businesses who may, in some cases, have very little prospect of paying those loans back and not necessarily because of the impact of the coronavirus."

Just watched it since you posted thanks for the link. @Chippy_Tea is it OK to start a new thread discussing statistics next steps and the end game away from threads with more emotional content and its more appropriate to discuss deaths as numbers/statistics?
Hi Simon i found it quite scary in places, and i shed a tear when the nurse who was basically living in a shed was on to protect her parents, a lot of peoples lives are going to change for ever

Coming out of lockdown is all part of this so I don't really see much point in having 3 threads on the same subject, I doubt many new members will read 147 so won't see the emotion which has died down quite a bit along with the post count.

It's the simple things we used to do that we now don't that stand out, I saw an old clip of something on TV last night where 3 blokes met and shook hands I said to SWMBO we won't be doing that again for a long time.

I am glad to see Ian Wright asking why we are trying to bring football back before it's safe to do so, he said he is missing it as much as the next fan but it's not the time to do this, I wish more people in his position would voice their opinion.

NZ have got this right for a few reasons in my opinion
1. Excellent leadership.
2. Decisive action taking like lockdown
3. Putting the people first not the greedy few.
Its also a country larger than the UK with about 60 million less inhabitants, so pro rata of the population a lot less idiots than the UK.
Also it isn't over until the fat lady sings.

A bit of local jealousy there Foxy.
Remember what a NZ minister said if he was worried about the emigration of people to Oz
"It's good it will raise the average IQ of both countries " 😂😂

Good to see Boris is taking some caution in opening up, a good tactic to see how the others fare. It would be a complete shambles relaxing the lock down and the virus takes off again.

Not any jealousy, in Victoria we have had 17 deaths to NZ 19 Half as much again in population and a smaller area.
The figures I would like to know is the difference of how many died because of corona virus, to how many died with corona virus.

I am looking forward to the day Boris announces the same - With new cases in single figures for several days - one on Sunday - Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the virus was "currently" eliminated.

New Zealand says it has stopped community transmission of Covid-19, effectively eliminating the virus.

With new cases in single figures for several days - one on Sunday - Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the virus was "currently" eliminated.

But officials have warned against complacency, saying it does not mean a total end to new coronavirus cases.

The news comes hours before New Zealand is set to move out of its toughest level of social restrictions.

From Tuesday, some non-essential business, healthcare and education activity will be able to resume.

Most people will still be required to remain at home at all times and avoid all social interactions.

Now our rules have been relaxed a lot of people will be out taking the piss and could put us right back where we're before.
It only takes a few inconsiderate party goers and I can assure you there will be a lot of that going on during the next week as people extend their bubbles.
