hi brewer's I'm looking to buy a temperature probe that I can leave inside my buffalo boiler while I'm mashing preferably witha long probe can anyone recommend one
many thanks

I was about to add a similar thread. I have three cheap thermometers and on my last (first) brew, they all gave me slightly different temperatures, so I need to get something decent and I like the idea of being able to just drop it in and leave it there.

I use the inkbird bbq. I doesn't stay in through the mash but I do keep it in throughout the boil tethered to the boil kettle with a clothes peg. Handy for it being sterilised and ready for when chilling for flame out hops and down to pitch temp.

I like the look of the ChefAlarm - I've seen it used in some videos and the alarm functions seem like a great idea. I've found it here for cheaper but you need to spend over £50 for free delivery.

It depends what you are after but I used this Ikea digital thermometer for a couple of years with good success. It has a long lead and can hang over the side of the mash tun/boil kettle and when I upgraded to a Thermapen, I tested the Ikea one and it was just as accurate. I also like that you can set an alarm so that it warns you when you hit strike temperature for instance.

Mine got splashed with sticky wort a fair few times over the years and carried on going but eventually it did succumb and started misreading and blanking out. At £7.50 it wasn't a huge loss and I'm going to pick up another one as it is really useful for keeping in the kettle/tun which you can't do with a thermapen.

Every now and then ETI sell them direct on eBay for around £27. I got mine for Christmas though :)

in action as we speak...

So I guess you just drop the probe end in the liquid and leave it in there?

I read on a local forum that the probe is really not waterproof. So buy 2 in case 1 gives up during a brew.
It's OK as long as you don't let any liquid reach the braided lead. Mine slipped in past this and wasn't reliable after that.
For the price though and as long as you are careful it serves well.

that's exactly what happened to mine just ordered the turata off eBay was up £24.99 or best offer got it for £20 free p&p comes with 2 probes will be a bit more careful in future

I seem to have got through loads of cheap digital thermoters, mainly through mishap (maybe I shouldn't drink when brewing but would it still ferment ok? I think not) anyway just ordered an inkbird BBQ probe so this was a useful thread for me.
