Cheers chewie does it often take more than 10 days to ferment.

I just bottled a californian connoisseur rioja kit, its instructions said 20 days for fermentation and it was pretty much spot on, gravity was well within there guidelines at start and finish, wine buddy and solomon grundy kits I've done have been nearer two weeks rather than the 7 days they claim. Temp fluctuations and viability of the yeast are probably the two biggest influences.
 
I will try some glycerine at some point in a future wowv for comparison.
I've heard of it being used as fining agent and to reduce the sharpness of young wine, does it help with body too?

Where are folks getting there glycerine from?

Thanks, that looks like a good deal, I had to go and collect some veg oil for my other brewing hobby last night and went right past a superstore so I grabbed three bottles of the same one Chippy posted for 65p each.

I may add some after some taste testing.
 
After leaving for a few days after fining my wowv was looking quite clear so I was gonna bottle today, but I managed to swirl up some of the sediment when I put my siphon in :doh:
so I've racked it into another dj via a muslin cloth and added some bentonite and will leave it for a few more days clearing then bottle.

It tastes lovely.........the missus tried a sip and agrees, happy days :whistle:
 
If you stir up the sediment again just leave it a while and itll settle down again, I have a bad habit of moving my DJ's just before I rack so usually manage to stir up a little sediment, it only takes a few minutes to settle down.
 
Hi, this is my first post on the forum. I have brewed 3 beer kits so far and after reading quite a bit of this thread put the following recipe on:

Asda RGJ 100%1.5L
Asda apple juice 100% 1L
700g sugar
Juice of 1 lemon
2 teabag tea
1 tsp of yeast, nutrient, pectolase & glycerine.

Really looking forward to finding out what this is like. Can't believe how easy and cheap it is to make! I have a question though. Is there any way you can make a wow come out like a red wine rather than white or rose?

. With darkest ingredients I can find. Let's be honest the ingredients cost about as much as a bottle of wine. And this is expensive recipe [emoji12]

I find the red grape and pomegranate to be closest to a red though it still is more like a rose.
 
Thanks guys will try those. Has anyone experimented with grape concentrate or food colouring / flavouring?
 
Sounds good, what was your recipe?

If I recall, I used about 8 lb of sloes made up to about 12 litres and added 2.5kg of sugar. After a week, I strained the must which gave me about 9 litres (2 gal 2xDJ). At this point, I then added 125ml of concentrate red grape juice and a level tsp of yeast nutrient to each DJ on the advice of the local brewshop owner.

There are still loads of Sloes in the hedges here in Norwich, once you find them, you just cant stop seeing them.
 
I tried red food colouring from Lidl. It's a combination of grape skin extract and paprika. Although this is better than those based on beetrroot, which fades, dried elderberries are much more effective. Currants (dried black grapes) are relatively cheap but fresh black grapes are the best!
 
Update Chewie,

I noticed that Aldi's sugar is back up to 45p a kilo but Farmfoods are back down to 39p a kilo, not quite as cheap as Looch was saying it was at B&M but maybe you have one near you.

Just looked at their site and B&M are back up to 45p as well ... just got to keep an eye out for prices I suppose.
