Morning

I know this question has come up in discussion many times but i just wanted to know if im doing the right thing.

I started a brew on Sunday morning it was a wilko pilsner, 500g light spray malt and 450g dextose. I swapped the packet of yeast for a youngs lager yeast. This was pitched at 18 degrees left for 30 mins then lightly stirred in. I then slowly reduced the temps to around 10 degrees.
I checked after a couple of days and there didnt seem to be any action so i though the temps may be a bit on the cold side. I then brought this slowly back up to 18 degrees again, gave it a light stir then kept it at 16-18 degrees until this morning. I checked again and still no signs of fermentation.
I took a hydrometer reading at it had not budged from my OG of 1.033.

Now heres the question!

I have re pitched the original packet of yeast wich came with the kit at 18 degrees to help kick start but im pretty sure this wont be a lager yeast so will this effect the finished taste or will the 2nd batch of yeast just help kick start the first and for there to be a mix?

Im also worried with it being in the fv for so long it may get infected!

Thanks in advance

Pete

I'm no expert but have read up a fair bit... I would say its just taking its time as you started at such a low temp, it can take 1 hour to 48+hrs for any activity to occur. I would also say that as you have used two different yeast then yes this will affect the flavour as the whole point in using different yeast is for different flavour (amongst other things).

I could be wrong...

I guess i may have been a bit hasty in pitching the original yeast then, just after 4 days and no drop from the OG i thought the yeast may have been killed off! Would i have been better adding a nutrient rather than the yeast?

I think, since you had it at around 10c for two days, and only warmed to 18c after that its still taking a bit of time to heat the FV. So it's probably just patience that you need! ;)

That's one thing I have learned about home brewing so far, a good dollop of patience fixes a lot of things. Leave it for another day or two to see what happens before doing anything to it, the yeast are just taking time to warm up I would say. :D

I have the same problem....

left for 3 days now and no airlock activity at all...the other 3 are going well but this one just dont want to start....

coopers havest bitter using s04 yeast??
