Do most people use these for making a starter? If so, do you leave it switched on all the time you are making the starter?

Any recommendations for good, reliable stir plates?

Yes I leave it on all of the time. You don't need a super deep whirlpool just gentle agitation/ swirling.

I've got an old large kegland one seems to be fine.
Plenty of videos on youtube that show you how to make them as well using PC fan, magnets and a rheostat.
