I'm not too keen, a lot depend on what happens to the data if it's stored for more than a few days or transmitted to anywhere then the risk to privacy and the potential for security outweighs the overall advantages.

I would agree with speed limiters in towns etc (20 to 50 zones) as assume this would be safer.
Motorway I can see the need for some speeding ie if overtaking the 68 mph driver, joining to get into the spaces etc. But then I would think an annoyance device to remind to get back to legal limit (maybe a loud crying baby!) would be good.

Not all German car buyers are twats its the ones that only buy the car because of the badge thinking everyone will be impressed i refer to.
I would have been amazed if it had been as the OP clearly states - Speed limiting technology looks set to become mandatory for all vehicles sold in Europe from 2022.
I voted 'other' as I am opposed to the law in its current form, as it will use a combination of technologies, and guess what, hidden in the detail is GPS tracking of all vehicles that you can't turn off. So the state will be able to track you everywhere you go. Not at all sinister, that, No sir, not at all.
Well sat navs don't always get it right anyway, I have 3 points on my licence because the sat nav said 40 but I was still in a 30 zone I thought i'd left miles ago. My memory is not the best and there weren't any reminder signs posted on road. Plus a lot of the roads in mid wales with 50 or 60 limit cant in my view be taken safely at that speed.
Plus temporary restrictions which are not uploaded to central control. You want to be able to trust the driver to have an override on whatever the technology decides....
I assume limiters will use the same technology so they may also not be 100% accurate.
After all these years of completely OTT highway insanity on the bikes, I got busted for doing 54 in a 40 zone. The camera was at the top of a very steep hill and I was braking hard after seeing off some **** in this massive BMW. I paid the then fee of £70 to attend a speed awareness course... 4 hours of looking out the window and occasionally showing interest so's I didn't get chucked out. But it was £70 well spent, no court appearance or insurance repercussions and my license remained point-free. Hehe.

Yes, it's a cause of accidents, but lower speeds are also better for the environment.
If your car automatically restricts you to the speed limit how long before everyone just drives with their foot to the floor? And then you get somewhere with no signal and hey presto you're nicked for doing 50 in a 30 limit.
Not sure about that. I'd say a vehicle is most efficient in a high gear with engine speeds at maximum torque, not pootling around in 2nd with the damn thing at little more than idling speed. Who gives a toss anyway, this is bordering on tedious climate change crapola again. You've seen these tree-hugging types with stickers of daffodils and stuff on their 2CVs and other comedy cars, and a sticker on the back saying "I'm helping to save the planet"? Well when I cash my vast pension early next year I'm gonna get me a 500hp monster and I'll have a sticker proudly displayed on the back saying "I'm helping to screw the planet, whatchu gonna do about it"?

You cant blame the sat nav, YOU should know the speed limits on the roads.
Speed limiters and retard rectifiers should be fitted as standard. On the way to work this morning and out come the idiots., overtaking me, ( I drive a SWB van towing a 10ft high and 14ft long trailer) on sharp bending country lanes at stupid speeds. I have the answer to speeding..Get your lazy fat ass out of bed 15 mins earlier, then no need to speed..Simples 
It may be different where you live but round here there are few speed limit signs on the roads, we all know the street lights = 30 mph rule (mostly before someone corrects me) but rural roads can be a nightmare especially if you are not from the area a perfect example of this is the A590 leaving my town it looks like any other 60 mph road but certain stretches are 50 mph max and there are few signs showing this (the cynic in me wonders why) so i am not surprised people are caught out, instead of putting pointless signs like the ones below up why not put more speed limit signs up if they want our roads to be safer.

I half agree but you should still know the limit, there are always signs as you go into a different limit, as police would say if you were caught, my point was not to blame sat nav, it's an aid not something you obey to the letter, its amazing the amount of people have issues by listening to sat nav and not looking around them.
or the alternative view..... most commuters spend 10-15 hours per week sitting in their car.
personally i like to sit that amount of time in a really comfortable car, in tranquil silence, nice surroundings and doing 50mpg at 85mph. Having the ability to drive like my hair was on fire when the need arises is nice as well. Its also massively tiring to drive a car on the motorway that is skittish, tramlines or crashes over every single lump and bump.
i cant do that in a frikkin daihatsu charade or a toyota yaris!
yes i own a merc, its amazing. But i am selling it in the next few weeks if anyone fancies a lovely C class estate! dont do the miles anymore and i'm getting a small shitbox

I do't think this is really about safety but to get cars fitted with something they can later tax every journey.
