Speed limiting technology [Poll]

I remember years ago they were discussing increasing the speed limit on motorways to 80 but they said if they did people would then push it to near 90 MPH, the police also said if everyone drove at the speed limit there would be lots of tailbacks and congestion on our roads, i think its a bad idea what are your thoughts?



Speed limiting technology looks set to become mandatory for all vehicles sold in Europe from 2022, after new rules were provisionally agreed by the EU.

The Department for Transport said the system would also apply in the UK, despite Brexit.

Campaigners welcomed the move, saying it would save thousands of lives.

Road safety charity Brake called it a "landmark day", but the AA said "a little speed" helped with overtaking or joining motorways.

Safety measures approved by the European Commission included intelligent speed assistance (ISA), advanced emergency braking and lane-keeping technology.

The EU says the plan could help avoid 140,000 serious injuries by 2038 and aims ultimately to cut road deaths to zero by 2050.

I must say to do break in to a wry smile when I'm out walking the dog and I see morons speeding away from the lights as if trying to get back to the future, only to wack on the breaks a few hundred yards away, for the speed camera, then hit the gas and tear off again only to slow down a few hundred yards further for the round about. Utter planks.

The poll answers were "loaded" as these are the main arguments given for both answers, i have added an extra option - Other - please give details in the thread.

The speed limiters would lower the speed to whatever the limit is wherever the car is or are you suggesting the limiters should only kick in where there is a danger of speeding causing accidents?

Its the same with speed humps they go over them slow them nail it to the next one and repeat.

What would be the point DoJ most sat navs now have the option to have speed limits showing on screen and give a warning if you go over i doubt many would turn limiting on if it was optional.

I'm not in favour of speed limiters on motorways unless it's combined with technology to prevent tailgating. I can see hundreds of vehicles all doing 78mph or whatever, but all thirty feet apart or less!

Speed is not the MAIN cause of accidents although it contributes to the consequences. The main causes of accidents are recklessness, inattention, not observing proper braking distance and not driving according to the prevailing conditions. Young drivers are not phsiologically capable of risk assessment until at least 21 years of age. But speed limiters and accelerometers are already being used by insurance companies to offer discounts to careful drivers, maybe we could encourage this and discount car tax and other vehicle overheads. There are many skilled high-speed drivers but many more who think they are skilled.

Speeding is a major cause of accidents whatever road you are on if they are going to bring this in in my opinion it has to be for all roads.

They already have cars with automatic braking if you get too close to the car in front and lane changing warnings if you nod off so this in my view would add to the package but i still believe it will cause more problems than it solves for the reasons given in my OP.

I can see a booming industry springing up in speed limiter hacking. A cheeky switch under the dash to allow the jump to warp speed. Every two lane motorway in the country would be gridlocked with cars trying to overtake another going a fraction of a mph slower.

The last statistics I read showed that excessive speed was the prime cause in less than 2% of accidents. Far more lives could be saved by for example teaching and enforcing lane discipline.

So come 2022, if we want a new vehicle we might as well buy a moped or bloody Yaris or somesuch. Might be better of with a pogo stick. Glad I won't have to sell the Veyron but christ knows what prospective buyers are gonna think.

I thought the same when i first heard the news but the penalties for speeding will be so high (like for truck drivers using magnets to stop tachographs working) only the determined will install such technology should they manage to hack these limiters.

I saw something I can't remember where that said you could override the limiter by pushing the throttle more to allow you to overtake safely. So it's likely more or assisted speed li it driving rather than a total limiter.

I'm one of those sad TWATS that own an Audi A6 3.0L Avant as I do loads of mileage per year, I also do the speed limit on all roads as my licence is needed for my job, sometimes I need to boot it but I am a safe driver with zero points on my licence.

I'm a hooligan biker and speed limits mean sod-all to me. But get this... I too have a clean license. Luck of the draw, I guess.
