Morning all,

Does anyone have experience of both keg types? I was going to treat myself to a small corny for my birthday the end of the month to make small batches (fancy a go at a NEIPA) and taking camping as I have several 19l ones. But for similar money you can get a 5l MK and a ball lock spear which would give the option of adding kegs at a later date.

Are they good for carbing as with a corny? Any bad points about them and are the various versions available the same thread?

I have both. They both do the same job, carbing same on both. Mini kegs seal well 100% of the time, cronies sometimes don’t seal so well at low pressure.
For bulk I would go for 19l corniest but if you are doing smaller batches then mini kegs will do the trick.
I’ve got three mini kegs from different suppliers and the threads are the same.
It’s really down to personal preference and price.

As with @BarnBrian I've got both (Corny and mini-kegs). But not used mini-kegs much yet because I got them last autumn, but come summer …

I haven't used the mini-kegs for smaller batches. Instead I transfer (under pressure) from full-sized Corny keg to mini-keg when I want to take some beer out. Mini-kegs (that take the ball-lock "spears") are available in 2L, 5L and 10L too (Amazon and eBay, eBay probably cheaper for accessories like extra caps with disconnects, etc. if you can wait for them to come from China).

But for me the biggest plus for mini-kegs is the price. You can still get 19L Corny kegs for a "reasonable" price (getting harder) but a reasonable price for a 9-12L Corny keg? Forget that! (Finding 9-12L Corny kegs is a bit of a chore too).
