Interesting discusion, here. My beers might be a bit strong for a "session", but a pint of orange squash mid-session keeps it on the straight and narrow.

How many either side of the squash break? :-)

How long is a piece of string?

I don't drink gallons at my age. Not even on a good night out. If you are only gonna drink half a dozen pints you doing worry about the ABV as its not that important. I try to drink new beers and I try to find quality. If you only gonna have six, they may as well be decent!!!

That said, most beers advertised as 'session' beers are around 4%.

Two of my favourite commercial beers are Manns Brown Ale (2.8%) and Adnams Sole Star (2.7%) - it's more about flavour for me than strength particularly!!!

Personally I would always avoid anything below 4%, session beers or "sessionable" as some would suggest are between 4% and 5%.

I am not a big drinker so a big session might be 6 pints, not very often more than that.

If I was have just a few pints maybe 5% to 6%

On colder nights I may just have the 1 pint but I like a good one 6% to 9%.

Just my thoughts & I guess I am mid atlantic.

I find it balances out, if I'm in the pub I'll drink 6-7 4-5% beers, if I'm at home I'll drink 4-5 6%+ beers. I've been homebrewing just over six months now and only done kits but even they kick pub beers into touch. The killer for me (being tight) is the price, I brewed 15L of TC for about £9 odd so a 1L bottle is costing me about 60p. A 500 (ish) ml bottle of Magners/Bulmers in the pub is costing somewhere near £4 and with pints creeping up to the same price it makes it hard to justify spending the money when I have gallons and gallons of different and very nice beers at home. Especially this time of year, sitting in the garden deciding what to drink next is one of life's hardships I can handle.

I sit there thinking the same thing. I rarely go to a bar or pub but this weekend me and SWMBO are going to a friends wedding reception.

I told her that I will drive home as I don't fancy paying £4+ for a pint when double that will get me over 40 bottles. I'll have one pint at the start of the night and then switch to lemonade, but even that is bloody expensive for what it is

I just made some raspberry cider which has turned out really nice, cost me about £4 for 10 bottles, as opposed to £4 for one bottle, or 2 from a supermarket.
