Must be something about Asda. I also vowed never to return to our local one, it's not the greatest anyway.
Apparently that day there was something up with the scan as you go system so everyone had to use the tills. Given it's a sizeable store there are about 3 manned checkouts, the rest is self scan, there were big queues for all. We had a fair bit of stuff.
Finally got to the self scan checkout, selected "I have my own bags", put bags on scale, "Someone will need to verify your bags..."
Eventually got someone but then it kept complaining about unexpected items and so on. Must have taken a good 10 minutes to checkout and of course also needed booze authorisation. I would have walked out by this stage, it was only as the wife and kids were also with us that we kept going.
Since they built a Lidl round the corner from us it is now our main shop and they have it nailed. No self scan at all, if there are queues staring to build more checkouts get opened. It's quick to get through the checkout provided everyone plays by the rules of bagging your shopping after checking out. So much better.
The only other one I'll tolerate is the Tesco, scan and pack with the barcode gun as you're going around. I tried the Sainsburys one once where you use an app on your phone but gave up after about 5 mins as it really didn't seem to work well.
Good that there might be some movement back towards normal checkouts.
