I made my first one of these last year to enter my local Wine Circle Christmas competition.
It was simple to do, and even though I started late and only added strawberries and raspberries (but loads of each) it came first! (out of 7 entries).
I used cheapest on display white rum (Aldi, Asda, Lidl) and it turned out great.
One tip - once the fruit has been taken from the jar, keep it somewhere dark or the fruit gets hard - lost a huge jar 'cos the wife decided to leave it on the windowsill over the weekend
This year my wife is making her own as well as me - hoping for a 1-2 finish!!
hi Samurailord, thanks for the reply as i am just starting my 1st Rumtopf and have planned using strawberries peaches pears plums raspberries and wood's 100%dark rum along with sugar, hopefully to turn out well for the summer and then start one for xmas and maybe use the fruit minced to make mince pies.(Mmm looking forward to xmas already) : Ken
That sounds good, I plan to do at least one this year.
Out of interest, what sort of quantities do you add of each ( as in sugar to fruit to rum). I was thinking of a white rum for late summer and then possible get a dark rum one on for Xmas...
Hi Hawkinspm,
Firstly peel any fruit like apples pears etc.My rumtopf then goes like this,1st layer of fruit say1lb of strawberries.
De stalk strawberries cut in 1/2 if large and cover with 1lb sugar for 1 hour, place fruit in jar and sugar as well.
Cover with rum about 1/2 inch cover on fruit,it is a good idea to put a saucer on fruit to keep it submerged.
Repeat layers with any fruit type/quantities but only add 1/2 the weight of sugar.Gently agitate jar say once a week to dissolve sugar.Put clingfilm over jar to stop evaporation and it will be ready approx 8-12 weeks after last fruit addition.
Always keep 1/2 inch of rum over fruit.Mmmm enjoy :
I cover my fruit in half it's own weight of sugar and leave it for an hour, then add to the Rumpopf jar and cover with rum so that the fruit is covered by at least 1/2 inch of liquor.
I didn't agitate my jar last year, but I can't see it can do any harm.
I found one of these in a junk shop a few months ago and paid £2 for it
Mrs Tubby has taken control of it and theres some lovely fruity rum in it now
My question is, what's the best way to use up the fruit?
I was thinking of using it as the base for a trifle :hmm:
