Has anyone had a go at making any roast barley solution? MM were selling some but by the time i placed an order was gone. I am thinking of cold steeping 500g and reducing the liquid down to 250ml. I would like to add it before fermentation so i can make an IPA and ferment half black.

If making a black ipa then you xan use carafe 3 in last ten minute s or during sparging

I think beercat wants to split the batch....making half a bipa...so needs to add the roast barley later to half. But...wouldn't adding roast barley add flavour thus detracting from the clean flavour of the ipa...whereas adding carafa 3 or as I did, black prinz, just gives colour....

I did it with carafa special 3, cold steeped in RO water (4L/kg) for 24 hours then strained through a muslin cloth. I haven't actually used it yet, I was toying with the idea of splitting a batch of saison and adding the carafa extract to half to make a black saison. But before risking ruining 10L of beer, I made up a little sample to see how it tasted. Turns out black saison is a terrible idea, now I know. So I put the extract into a ziplock bag and chucked it in the freezer. I'll probably add it to the extract stout I'm making in a few weeks. But the cold steeping worked well, the extract is as black as ink but there was a little too much roast flavour and it really clashed with the spice in the saison.

No. Sorry i cant remember who made it as MM website has changed and i cant find anything. Will email him and ask.

I cold steeped for my black Kolsch and only used 5% but it still had more roast than i wanted. Was a nice beer though and it did trick people and they liked it. Would like to be able to use it almost like food colouring though.
