Punk IPA

call me green but I am relatively new to beer.. mostly drink wine and spirits.

I know what I like - for better or worse I really like BrewDog Punk IPA. I have just made a mangrove jacks kit that is very nice indeed - it claims to be "like" Elvis Juice" and wondered if anyone had brewed a kit like Punk IPA?

I read youngs IPA is good and it has a 40 page thread, the thing that just about stopped me from buying it is the ABV - at 6.5 it's a bit much for me... was after something nearer to 5.5%

any suggestions?

In the Recipe section at the top of this page there are many recipes for "Punk" beers.

I suggest that you have a trawl through them and find something that you like.

thanks for the info - wowzers there are certainly a lot of resipes in there. Unfortunately for me being a newb the only ones with any votes are all grain.

I was after a kit that was similar to Punk IPA..

anyone done one?

I have actually now ordered a Youngs American IPA as it seems a lot of people have tried that.. a bit on the strong side but I guess that's just more value for money.

I found eight Punk recipes in the Extract section.

You have to put in "punk" as the key word and then choose "extract" in the method.

Don't know of any kits but it's easy enough to buy the right extract and hops for a recipe. Just go to a Homebrew shop with your ingredients list.

Best option would possibly be to dry hop the Youngs IPA kit using the dry hop schedule in Diydog and work from there.

I've found that the best way to get a response from the Forum is to decide on a recipe and then ask a "What do you think?" question.

Personally, I don't like starting with a "blank canvas" but pointing out things to be aware of seems different.

I guess its mostly because the exact answer exists. It's not a discussion when the actual recipe of the punk IPA is available.
The best way to mimic the punk IPA is to brew the recipe they have have published.

It is. However, the OP has given some parameters based on their level of experience and what they have available, so any advice should reflect that, to achieve an approximation of Punk IPA.

@needmorstuf If 6.5% is too strong you could brew with a litre or two more water than stated in the instructions of your kit, to bring the ABV down. Edit: I see the kit contains brewing sugar, leaving some of that out will lower the ABV. Some Amarillo and Nelson Sauvin hops to complement the dry hops with the kit, will head things towards Punk IPA.

I guess the problem is that the people who have experience in cloning are probably not the people who use malt extract.

But yeah I agree! Water it down/remove any sugar that is added. And use the dry hopping scheme which is supplied by brewdog!

Another option is just buy the unhopped malt extract itself. Then do the boiling steps with hop of brewdog yourself and do the dry hopping scheme! That will definately give an approximation of the hoppiness. The maltyness is really dependent on the specific malt extract you would be using. This is more work of course, but the beer will be more your creation!
