Stupid question but is stout like mild?? my dad likes mild and was thinking I might do a kit for him..Pint looks good by the way.

Stout is much more roasty than mild. Your dad may well like it - but you could always do a mild kit. There are some good reviews in the kit review section for Better Brew Mild, Geordie Mild, Simply Mild and Young's Harvest Mild. Some good advice is to brew it well ahead of handing it over, these kits improve enormously with time, like 3 months if you can.

You can go one better and use DME (dry malt extract). I used to use 1kg for a coopers kit.

+1.

Massive improvement in flavour and mouth feel. Better still, try a partial mash in a paint straining bag. It really ain't rocket science. 2 kg of crushed marris otter, mashed for an hour at 66C, and then boiled for an hour, then pour in the Coopers can and liquor up to the required volume with water in the FV and you are on the road to a revelation in beer making.

No. There both dark beers but thats where it ends. Stouts are usually more roasty tasting. Mild is like a weaker version of a Northern Brown Ale (actually in the BJCP style guidlines mild comes under brown ales)

Nice work FD. You know what he means don't you ;)

I know EXACTLY what he means but I think kits are the way for me for the time being. So the dark side is a temptation I must resist at the moment.

Why? Because I'm trying to get into shape so alcohol is a rare treat for me now and for the foreseeable future (hence my absence from the forum for a little while).

I still love making wines and beers and will continue to do so but I think, alas, much of my produce will be destined as gifts to friends and family.

That said, this stout will be my tipple of choice for the foreseeable future and I am still looking forward to trying my Yule brew when it is ready (about xmas time strangely enough).

I will still be around but maybe not quite so active.

I don't drink that much myself FD, for health reasons - and making small batches of AG fits the bill perfectly! Smaller quantities of high quality beer - so I can treat myself. :-D

Keep talking (my arm is easily twisted). Perhaps I can fit it into my 5-a-day if we talk long enough. ;) :thumb:
