Hi,
How long will the pressure hold good within a 2 litre sparkling water type bottle ...I read some time ago that pressure decreases after several months - is this true? :hmm:

I dont know, but i know the plastic is permeable over time, I use glass bottles but I can see the advantage of having a large PET bottle as a mini-keg.

I have read somewhere about converting the PET bottle tops with a tyre valve and force carbonating with a CO2 tyre inflator - has anyone tried this?

Hi Chiefstoker,
Don't Morrisons sell one of those pump up lids that you inject air pressure into the bottle to retain the fizz? (about £3.50)....this should work for you. :thumb:
......When storing big pet bottles does anyone get away with storing these on their sides?

I think you'd struggle force carbonating with one of those. force carbonating i'm pretty sure would require a source of pure co2. possibly mixed with nitrogen as i think scheider and guinness et al do. but certainly no oxygen. oxygen might be alright sat on top of fizzy pop but i wuldnt want it on my beer for too long.

a co2 bike pump sounds like a very good idea however. i could fit 1 gallon bottles into my fridge. split my wort into 4 boils experiment a little.

What I was meaning re my comment on the pressure retainer was that it could keep beers stored in plastic bottles fresh when delving in and out of a 2 litre pet etc  :D

I'm using the 5 litre bottles I got my spring water from + thery expanding with the pressure having to let some out everyday

I'm going for a pressure barrel next time with a pin vallve so I can inject C02

I'm using the coopers bitter kit + used normal sugar next time I be using glucose.

Tastes ok drinkable

Hi Cwrw,

I use 2 ltr plastic PET bottles for my cheap kits, have only had problems with the lidl coke bottles...think they're called freeway, they tended to blow the tops off. others are ok...Tesco..pepsi..7up etc etc.

I found you can only store them standing up otherwise the sediment mixes up a bit.

Pressure wise i have had no problems, 10days somewhere warm, then some where cool till drinking, i've never had an exploder in nearly a year of brewing.

The only thing is with 2ltrs i have to pour off carefully the whole lot into a jug, otherwise the sediment mixes and is a pita.

I'm not sure if thats a problem or a bonus!! :drink:

I've had beer in pet bottles for years - I found a bottle hidden away in the shed!. It had plenty of gas in it.

That's not a position I would store them. Unless you have a very good yeast which sticks like the 'proverbial', when you come to pour the beer, you will disturb the yeast.

Thanks for the replies all .....really helpful :D

Marsie, how much priming sugar have you been using to maintain the fizz - I'm onto 4-5g per 500ml?

Thanks All,

Wow! unless my maths has gone wrong, that's 8 oz!! Not brewed beer for a while, (soon to restart!), but it was one level teaspoon per pint; 2oz max for 5 galls. I put the priming sugar in the bulk rather than in individual bottles. That way, you get an even distribution in each bottle. Make sure the fermentation is complete before priming though.

I know that sounds excessive but I like a good fizz (mostly lagers and Belgian ale),but likewise I prime the bucket prior to bottling :thumb:
