Your mention of geranium smell made me think that the problem was with sorbate/sorbic acid (https://www.bacchus-barleycorn.com/catalog/article_info.php?articles_id=44). Don`t know how this could be related to a problem with the element. If replacing the element solved the problem I guess these are unrelated issues that have the same phenotype.
