Just tasted another of my Woodfordes Wherry .... for no other reason than I fancied one. :D
My... its a wherry nice pint....can't get a head to last but its carbonated just right, its as clear as a bell wth only a little sediment in the bottle, its a nice crisp tasting beer with just a hint of lingering bitterness.

Wotcha PD, I too have problems with head retention on my brews. The last one was a bit better and I'm hoping that the current WW thats in FV1 (1 week tomorrow) will be better. After your reports of the WW you brewed, I'm really looking forward to this one

look on the bright side.................less head...more beer....

Its a cracking pint. given 5-6 weeks in the bottle

I think autumn's arrived !
I've 2 brews fermenting in the garage amongst my stash at the moment and having been able to ferment at a steady 20-21C all year, I've just noticed the air temp has dropped to around 15C and my beer temps have dropped to 18C. One has just finished fermenting so will be ok with the cooler temperature but my latest brew still has a day or so to go, so I've put a heat belt around it for the night. Will re check its temp before leaving for work tomorrow and adjust if required.
So its another thing to watch out for especially as the clocks go back at the weekend and those nice weathermen say snow is on the cards for several places in next few days !
I might be moving over to lager brewing soon......nah I'll get the blankets out.

My last brew of wherry has kept its head in the glass down to the last half inch or so. I hope I'm as lucky with the batch of wherry I'm currently conditioning.
BTW PD, a very informative thread.

Thank you. I am still learning and make lots of mistakes, I end up doing things that are probably wrong, but I don't mind being told that, at least I get to know the right way to do it !
I was a big wine maker 20-30 years ago so I understand the basics of wine making quite well, although some of my methods might be out of date. But I only started beer making at the beginning of this year. So if this thread points out problems, teaches folks how to etc, or makes them question what they are doing themselves then its doing its job. Of course we have a laugh along the way.
I think a lot of folks forget that beer making is as old as the hills, men have been doing it for centuries, ( after all fermentation is a natural process ).
and surround it in a lot of mystery.
Us mere mortals can make good beer without a university degree without extensive background knowledge, but its there if we went to delve deeper.
Have fun...brew your beers the way you want to,the beers and wines you want to drink, and put a finger up to the tax man. No doubt he will get us in the end but till then...stuff him ! :D
Good brewing and wine making.

pd, which heat-belt do you use? I'm having a similar problem to you so need to keep my brew temps up.

Mine was bought over 20 years ago.
but its similar to these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=h ... +heat+belt

as I said a lot of folks decry them but in an emergency they work ok but you have to keep your eye on them and position them in various places up and down the fermenting vessel, they are really designed for wine making with demi jons.

A full blown cabinet is the way to go if you have space, and I'm thinking of building an insulated box up on the brewing bench to hold my 3 fv in with perhaps a little tubular heater or light bulb inside. I don't have enough room for a fermenting fridge.

just took gravity readings of the last two brews in their fV
Timothy Taylor OG 1.043 FG 1.011= 4.2% abv
Gob hobling OG 1.052 FG 1.012 = 5.3% abv

Hmmmm beer....

I do like this hobby !

:D

The process of beer making is as old as the hills and hasn't changed. The mechanics of how we brew have certainly changed though.
But what I do like is that as long as you get the basics right and pay attention to cleaning and sterilising you can brew however you want and get good results.
Kits, extract, All Grain its your choice depending on your available time and money.

As you wander around the forum you can see however, how many folks decide to tinker and delve deeper into the brewing process. I've got to admit sometimes they baffle me.... but its all interesting to read about and I'm sometimes left in wonder at the skills shown by members, not only in brewing but in other associated skills, electronics, mechanics and so forth. There's some clever folks out there, and I take my hat off to them.

That's one of the reasons I like brewing, you can be as involved as you want to be or knock out some beer now and again with the minimum of fuss.
I'd love to be as exact as some of the brewers are on here, but I'm afraid that that is beyond me.
I'll refrain from mentioning any member by name, but some of the skills and expertise shown by certain members is mind blowing, and from people like myself I'd like to say a big thank you to them for parting with their expertise and knowledge. Its a pleasure to read the posts.

Anyway's as we enter the time of year of shorter days and longer nights I can look forward to reading many more interesting threads and posts and I know I'll be kept entertained, amused and probably perplexed.

Now whats next to brew...... :D

couldn't agree more, thanks to reading this forum and threads like this one i'm now contemplating going AG. Even started making my own mash tun! Really enjoying my new hobby so just wanted to thank everyone for all their posts and encouragement.

Ah well.......

Had a new brew day today. no hassle no problems and ended up with 21 litres of 1.042 Exmoor Gold, or my version as I'd run out of East Kent Golding and substituted Fuggles in their place. First Blondie type beer I've made and I think I've heard all the jokes about urine samples there is :D

bottling day tomorrow....all told there's 38 litres to bottle.... long day....

well I've caught up with my bottling and traffic can flow again.... :D
shelves in the garage are just about full up, as is the airing cupboard and various shelves in wardrobes !... good job Christmas is coming up.
Tasted my Piddles Dribble ( first AG brew ) and well impressed, still waiting for the others to get conditioned, although tonight I've had a taster of Sarah Hughes ( 2nd brew ) she's a bit flat chested at the moment but will get there, needs a couple more weeks carbonating due to this cooler weather.

After being tea total for over 15 years I think I'm getting my taste back.... :D
Nah I'm still very conservative in my drinking, although today was an exception.... messing about with my brews and bottles I've downed 3 bottles during the day ! wow.

I'm also turning a little vicious as I've set a few traps down in the garage for the mice, grains are well protected and I've bulk stored bird seed for years but due to cold weather the mice are starting to move indoors, so action has to be taken. I use to use live traps but when I let them go outside they always got back into the garage before me  So now its serious.
Hope everyone is doing well with their beer/ wine making and managing to build up their stocks for Christmas. Good food good drink, family and friends...that's what the holiday is about.

Mice 4 .... me 0
they keep pinching me peanuts and getting away....

Delivery arrived today from Malt Miller, a few speciality grains and hops together with a couple of yeast packets.

Bottled Gob Hoblin today and moved it into the warmth for a couple of weeks ( going to have to think about a fermenting cabinet/box soon, wifes is scowling at the space I've stolen in the airing cupboard...) Sarah Hughes 2 moved onto the garage floor so the Co2 can be absorbed into the beer, PET bottles are nice and hard.

Took my son to the lhbs as he wanted a simple quick kit to do for a friend of his as a Christmas present, he settled on a Coopers Australian Pale Ale. Apparently his friends name is Poo.... whatever... :(
While there I picked up another one of his cheap 30 litre buckets with lid £6, they are very good value and are very handy in and around the brew den.
Brewing on Thursday I think, possibly a Wherry Clone as we all enjoyed the Woodefords kit, wonder how different an AG brew will be.

Happy brewing

Had a little snifter today of Sarah Hughes 2. about a week after my first taste.
Oooh she's improving. Just a little rough on the bittering side but I'm sure she will mellow a little. Very clear, lovely dark brown colour and a sweet smelling aroma at the present, different but nice. She is a bit of a nose tickler as well....

If anyone is still taking an interest.....

Its brew day !

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=31546

Had a very good day, without any disasters, ( apart from chilling my wort down and leaving the boiler on at the same time ! )

As a result the beer is still too warm to pitch the yeast so is sat sealed up in the fermenter at this time.

Son also put a Coopers Australian Pale Ale on the go yesterday. its destined as a Christmas present for one of his friends. all though we might mix and match with a few other beers.

well got the yeast pitched at 10.30pm ish , 29C so still a little warm but coming down.
By morning the brew had a 4 inch crust of yeast on the top....going like the clappers....

This morning I've just bottled my Exmoor Gold brew looks and tastes very nice. ( very pale like a lager..was tempted to slightly over carb it but resisted the temptation.)

Starting to make inroads into the mice population in the garage...good ol peanut butter..they can't resist it. I'm a total wildlife nut but sometimes action has to be taken before things get out of hand, and with mice it don't take long for them to increase to pest proportions.
One was in my conservatory the other night, helping himself to the dog's biscuits from his bowl he was sat watching the darned thing....

Time now to get the coffee pot on the go and settle down to watch the Rugby International England v Figi...might be a bit of Claret flowing this afternoon... :D
on the field that is.

Those are well looked after mice....have you seen the price of peanut butter...not bad for a last supper

Doh

mice scored one back tonight. I stood on a mouse trap wearing me slippers.......  :nono:
